View Full Version : 253g, 1200W and two portholes - my 65"x29"x30" reef
My new tank measures 65" X 30" X 29" the other two tanks are being made at the moment they are 60" X 20" X 18" and I may have to build a bigger sump!
The tank sits in our livingroom and I have had two 18" port holes drilled at the back so that the tank can be viewed fron the kitchen as well. I haven`t got as far as putting water into the new tank as i`m waiting on some pipework to arrive.
I really don`t know how i`m going to transfer all the stuff in my current tank:)
Also anyone got ideas for the aquascaping as I cant seem to make up my mind. The weir is at the back in the centre.
pjos11
take a look at reef blokes tank in the members tank section, or see here http://www.ultimatereef.com/TOTM/2007_may/ he has a central weir
I thought I would let you guys know of what I`m upto.:)

I have had some corals die lately and don`t really know why!:(
Bloody hell, that looks great:thumbsup:
As for your corals, can you explain a bit about your system parameters etc it may help to find out what has gone wrong
i love that, thats what you call thinking outside the box!
how di you manage to get the circles cut so cleanly in the acrylic?

mate that's stunning :bigeye: excellent work..
I bought them from a company and they will cut it for you. Notice I can change the colour should I wish.
can we see a pic from the other side please :)
This is the only picture I have at the moment. The kitchen is next to get done after I`m finished the tank ( wifes orders ):D So the port holes will be part of the sitting area in the new kitchen.

bloody fantastic mate!
i can see everyone arguing over the porthole facing seats at breakfast time!
that is class welcome i want to see more:applause:
I had mentioned that the polyps had not extended in the soft coral that you can see in the pic. All my water parameters are fine. This has been going on now for about 4 weeks now has anyone got any idea what could be wrong? Should I have asked this question in another section?
Paul
sorry, i think we all got carried away with your photos!
whats the flow like in there, perhaps they are building up a mucus that needs shedding, but with poor flow they will struggle to do this.
are you running carbon?
if not, might be worth considering as there may be some toxin in there stressing them out
Thanks for that:D
This morning when the lights came on I noticed small white spots on the coral. I am running two tunze 6100 pumps in the tank. I also have a 7095 controller.
This morning I cleaned my return pump in the sump there was alot of dirt buildup in it.
The kitchen is next to get done after I`m finished the tank ( wifes orders ):D
You're very lucky then :D - I think most wives would order the kitchen to be done first - then you can mess around to your heart's content with the tank!
A bit of thought gone in there - unique perspective from the portholes. Will be interesting to see your aquascape as will certainly be even more of a challenge than usual! :)
Thanks for posting and remember to keep us posted!
John
I got the lights connected today by my electrician. 3 Arcadia 400watt Halides. Some pics

ok, next question, what have you used to line the insides of the holes, looks like brushed aluminium, must have cost a fortune!
have you done the building work yourself or got someone in?
also, whats in the cabinet underneath, are you having a sump in there or are you piping out to the garage where your 100g tanks are?
and what size is the tank? looks about 6 x 3 x 3 ?
I got a local company to cut 2 X 18" core holes in the wall it cost £150. Another company made the port holes which are stainless steel. The rims and the liners are one piece. The liner is 2" longer than the thickness of the wall as I wanted this gap behind the aquarium to feed cables and so that I could change the backround if I wanted. The port holes cost £258.
There is nothing in the cabinet at the moment as all the `other` stuff will be going in the garage. The only thing that will end up in the cabinet is the pump controller. The return and overflow pipework will run along the wall into the garage and this will be covered by two bookcases that are two arrive in two weeks. They are the match for the cabinet.
The aquarium is 65" x 30" X 30". I am waiting on the pipework to arrive into my LFS which should be here Wednesday. (can`t wait that long):)
One thing which I am unsure about is how I am going to transfer everything over to the new tank!!!!
the best way would be to get the new tank set up and running with sand and salt and cured liverock.
leave it a couple of weeks to let any die off cycle out, and keep the lights on to a minimum, say 4 hours a day. by that time algae will be starting to take off, so get the cleaners in and maybe one tang.
then a week later transfer corals and lastly the remaining fish over the next couple of weeks.
id say it would take about 6 weeks to change over - however i did mine in just 3 weeks with no ill effect
Guys as you know I am having trouble with a coral. I HAVE WORMS!!!! I have been reading about this and tonight I took out the coral and under it there was like balls of grit. So I looked at this more closely and there they are!!
Can you give me advise I have not had this problem before. I read about a fresh water dip but for how long?
Need some help please.
I need to buy a pump and I don`t know which one:o The main tank is about 1000 litres and I am installing two other tanks in the garage also about 100litres each (which will return to the sump also). I want to have one pump that will pump to the main tank as well as the two tanks in the garage. Can anyone advise? This is the setup in the garage.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m269/pjos11/Newtankidea.jpg
If your sump is for biological filtration - housing algea/sand/mud, then a flow through of about 6 times per hour is about the norm - about 6000 lph. Go bigger, and any extra flow can be tapped off to cycle through your other 2 tanks.
If your sump is purely for mechanical filtration - skimmer, Zeolites, phosphate removers then size it to thier requirements - i'm guessing your prospective skimmer will need about 2000 lph??? and any more through the sump is a waste of energy???
If you're not familiar with the Zeovit/ULNS systems, then do some research - its the way forward in modern reefkeeping, and now is the time to get it in integrated into your system!!
I'd look at something like a Sequence 10K/12K/15K, or a Deltec HLP if funds allow.
Oh, and welcome!!!!! UR is a great place!!!!!!

that looks fugging superb mate!
That looks great, what a brilliant idea portholes in the kitchen
John.
Yeah does look nice - from your aquascaping pic if that tank is 30" high, reckon you must be around 8'6"!! or is it the perspective? ;)
John
Thanks for the replys. The pic of the guy over 6Ft is the LFS owner James. I am 5ft 5" and will probaly fall in one day should I need to touch the bottom of the tank.
Must say that my LFS where amazing in the advise and help given to me from the start, I wish all Fish shops where like this.
I have the tank now running through one of the tanks in the garage and the skimmer is going full blast although it is not really collecting much for some reason?

Quality, I have enjoyed this thread, there must be more news now :) :)
Quality tank and great aquascaping, love the look from both sides of the wall top class stuff
I have been busy piping up the tanks and sump that are in the garage. I will post some pictures later. This week I have redone the rockwork and I added the sand only last night. I have now got the pumps in circulation around the system. So I am ready to begin moving the corals etc soon. I don`t want to rush this so I will add some at a time although I am looking forward to getting it finished now:D
Really cool setup, You got us hooked. Good luck with the transfer
disco_dave

good to here your getting on well..
As you will see the rockwork has been redone. One reason was to give more room around the rock at the back so that I can clean the glass. It was hard to do that before.

There is another bookcase to go at the right hand side once I get the tank moved. Anyone interested in the older tank? :whistling:

Is that pice of wood at the bottom supporting the cabinet ?
Beautiful concept and design, simple and elegant in appearance and the execution wonderful OMG I sound as if I am at work :o
In short I love it.
One thing, and this is not a criticism, but wouldn't it be wonderful if the MH's could be supported from and the power cables fed from the wall so that they seem to float above the tank. Impossible I guess as you need to be able to adjust the height.
Are you an Architect or designer by any chance?

Superb finish on the port holes. I'd say they were a bargain for money. I can see there's been a lot of planning one into the project and it's paying off dividends now. The results are fantastic, can't wait to see it fully stocked.
One question though - is that tank in the garage solely held up by those two wall brackets? It's got a bit of a lean on ;)
Phil
Thanks guys for all your comments:)
To answer some of your questions- yes the wood at the bottom of the unit is to give extra support. I put it there to be sure to be sure. Although the unit is rock solid and well made it does no harm and will be trimmed to match the unit.
I am not an Architect although many a night I couldn`t sleep thinking of how I was going to do this project. I suppose all this thinking time has worked out! I was originally going to do a hole in the wall but the building work involved put me off. Easier to get two blokes come cut two 18" holes in the wall while I was at work and the wife waited in on them:D I told the wife " Its just a little dust " WOW!!! A LITLE"
The tank that looks like its going to slide of its bracket is for mixing water for my older tank it will be coming away soon. Well spotted LOL
I would love to hide the cables from the lights but I could not see how this could be done. I suppose this is something the manufactures can think about. I have been considering getting the lights cased in when the other bookcase is placed to the right hand side. Although you cann`t see it in the picture the second bookcase is behind the one you see. When they are placed either side I will be able to view the tank from the side ( well half of it ).
I was going to start moving things in but I only put the sand in on Thursday should I wait?
Paul
The rock work was drilled with a 22mm core drill and then placed over plastic pipework that was made before hand in different angles. The plastic pipe you can buy in any Plumbers merchant or DIY store. One point to note is that the pipe itself is NOT strong and may kink. I have placed 15mm plastic solid rod within the pipe to give it strengh.

I think there is a way you could of supported the lights 'invisibly' and hidden the cables at the same time, however it would mean knocking bits out of your wall and maybe invalidatng any warranty on your lights. So I won't suggest it unless you really want me to.
Personally I think the stylish and simple arrangement you have there would be spoiled by encasing the lights.

it does look special tbh!
:worship:
see page 9 of that thread for a novel way of hanging a halide on the wall with an aluminium rod!
I have been asked how I supported the rockwork so here are a few pictures to explain.
The materials needed.
You can angle the uprights whatever way you want and glue them. I was told that you can fill the pipework with sand and cement mix but I bought plastic rod and put that down the pipework to give strength.
If you have two of the pipes passing each other you can join the rockwork at this point so that you can go higher with the pillars.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m269/pjos11/2008012626012008_09.jpg
I drilled the rock with a 22mm core bit which is 12" long. It was easy to drill.

No I hadn't seen that thread Wayne, Muzzy but that's the sort of thing I was thinking of. But with 2 (I thought stainless due to th length needed) rods as PJ needs to mount his longways. Also I wondered about acryllic spacers between the ligh and the wall, a third space coud be put in the centre to take the cabling. But Im not sure if the aryllic would get too hot?
yeah acrylic would probably melt and bend in half!
I like to look at other peoples tank pictures so I thought I would post some of my own to bring this setup up to date.

need to see some new pics through the port holes!
move the sps when you feel the tank is running stable
Thanks Muzzy
I think with the amount of water I`m never going to see any signs of a spike of something. I have been swapping water from my old tank to my new in small amounts over the last few weeks. I am worried about my Anemone. When I first got him I thought he was not going to make it but in the end the little guy pulled through and now hes not Little! But when do I move him is a question I am struggling with. Any ideas?
now that is very nice!!!
how 'bout a recent peek through one or both of the portholes?

I must admit that when I am in a pickle I have my local fish shop owner James on hand to give advise, he has went out of his way to help me plan this project from the beginning. Only for his help I would never have began this new setup, so I am forever grateful. Thankyou James!!!!
I don`t think I can mention the name of his shop which is such a pity as this guy is here to help us in everyway possible and I can only recommend his shop in Belfast to anyone. So if you want to take up this most enjoyable hobby you can take comfort in knowing that there is someone to hold your hand (if you get what I mean) along the way.
I thank all you guys for your advise and support. Looking at your tanks are what put all these ideas into my mind.:thanks:

I didn`t know that there was so much work in a new setup:eek: I have been working at this for years! ( OK weeks ). I have now the pipework in the garage finished and the old tank is empty at last. Anyone want to buy it?
I will post up to date pictures of the new setup tomorrow.
Well i took some pictures today after all the work and things were looking pretty well until I looked at the Naso Tang that I introduced awhile ago. I noticed some spots on him about 10 days ago and today the spots are worse than ever:(

I have been reading about this. Your supposed to remove all the fish from the tank. At the moment I can`t even get that around my mind, I suppose I`m in denial. The Regal Tang is beginning to show some spots also. I am hoping that someone will give advise other than `remove the fish` surely someone has beat this without removal.

Stunning, Paul - how's it going now?
Jealous---me----no way .lol..Great set up.The red works well above the tank.

Love the port holes viewing! awesome.
I have had to move a few corals about for different reasons but all seems well.:) The spots on the Tang have mostly cleared up but I still see some from time to time.
I used Ozone for awhile until the Mv got to 350 and it seems to stay around 350 without dosing it now.
I bought 10 frags of a retailer in England and they were good valve for money ( £100 ). Since adding them about 6 weeks ago they have made a big difference to the look of the tank.
Thanks Guys for taking an interested as it seems to keep me going somewhat.:D

Yes a very nice tank indeed fella, like the scaping
Wow, that's looking awesome!!!
Can't beleive it's 6 months since you were setting up!
Some very nice pieces there too, keep up the stirling work!
My computer has been broken for awhile now and I should get it back next week. When I do I will post some new pictures.
The anemone is still in the same place and I hope it will not begin to move. I have had a list of other problems and it seems that once you get it sorted another pops up!!!! I supose its part of the hobby. My main worry is that I`m going to France for three weeks and I don`t know what will happen while I am away.:(
Thanks for your interest once again. Regarding the cabinet : When I get the credit card sorted I may consider changing it a little:whistling:
Paul
Fantastic Design absolutely love it (especially the port holes), well done :worship:
It will be very nice to see some more pics and you are pretty lucky the way that nem has made itself comfy makes the portholes even better!
Matty
I have to say its the first time I have read through the thread, bloody awesome M8, this gives a total different perspective to reefing
The porthole Idea I don't think Ive ever seen it before and sure a few will be following your Idea in the future :applause::applause:

I've probably looked at EVERY tank picture here on this forum - and this is by far my favorite - Keep up the good work mate - And keep the pics comming :)
Instead of a tank in the garage and and hole in the wall in the living room like some you could have 20ft of tanks (say 5 x 4x2x2) all linked together for a fraction of the cost on a 20x2x2 with portholes in the living room that would give the impression you had a 20ft tank!! Linked together with one sump you could have different incompatible species if you wish too. Give the impression you live underwater....captain nemo stylee!
novel idea! the portholes are wicked. very impressive tank

Can't believe I haven't seen this thread, love the porthole idea, superb.
Amazing, I was just drawing out plans last week about the idea of having a porthole from the business looking into the end of what will be my new 3.5x2x2 as we're knocking down 7 walls anyway, but it doesnt look like we can really be bothered.
Your tank looks amazing anyway, really stylish with the portholes

I have always called him the Big Tang!!:D As for the proper name I am unsure:o He loves his food.
I ahve done some research and i am 99% sure its a Acanthurus mata or elongate surgeonfish, and can grow to 50cm!
I have just posted a video that some may find interesting. Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh5fgppDQC4)
Just read this thread for the first time, tank looking stunning, espeically like the portholes - very nice touch - do you have any more pictures through them, or of the tank setting from the porthole side?
Sorry for the request for more pics!
Lovely, really enjoyed the vid. How clever to get the nem to sit in front of one of the port holes!
