View Full Version : Echinogorgia sp. Seafan
Following on from the Menella sp. discussion - this is what I think is an Echinogorgia sp. although i'm not 100% sure

Very nice! I also believe it is an Echinogorgia. There is someone local to me that has a very similar gorgonian. They seem to be about as easy to care for as Menella, at least for the time being.

are seafans very sensitive to water temperature?

Would you confess to how much and where from in a PM? Lovely thing.
Re temps I have a Menella and when the heater got stuck on recently and temps were at 29C it was open, fine and feeding.
thats a really stunning looking coral

I have what i believe is the same gorgonian. I don't think it is Echinogorgia, rather Paraplexaura. According to Fabricius, both genera have retractile polyps, but the Paraplexaura have almost always no calyce 'bump' and are quite smooth, which mine is when closed. Has not proved easy to keep, but is hanging in there and growing a bit. Unfortunately, my Zanclus nips at it often.
Hi keith, was wondering how your getting on with this fan, any updated pictures?
How is it looking now?
Hi Will,
The coral is looking about the same. Unfortunately, due to unforseen cirumstances I have had to shut my tank down... the coral is currently in a holding tank and I hope to be giving it to a local reefer asap.
Keith
You'd looked after it so well so extra sorry to hear you've had to do that dude, my very best to you.

Hi
I was the local reefer who inherited it. Sadly it receded gradully over the two years I had it - I tend to confess failures freely to help others either avoid or get it right! :) I have menella (yellow) and they are pretty health and holding thier own (one also from KeithM). I've found that the more flow the better - if it is waving it is happy. I'm feeding enough in the tank to keep menella (yellow) alive. However, the azoo purple whips and fans I've had much less success unfortunately. I have a few sun corals and these are still going three years later.
The purple really "pops" on this gorg, but its polyps are smaller than the yellow menella and I've not seen them for sale in my LFS. KeithM got his from Fishman I believe. I've checked from time to time but they seem to be out of stock.
Sorry I can't give you much more info. I feed rotifers, copepods frozen and live, mysids, raw prawn heads, krill, etc. lots of mixes of food of a big wide range of size.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Don't think they are rare because i've seen this type and also the blue and purple types offered for sale.Newbies normally impulse buy them as they are very colourful and they aren't aware they need specialist care. Most die as they are difficult to keep long term.

Difficult yes. I think with most gorgs of this type at best you are keeping them going, but not thriving and growing. They are really for a specialist set up with constant food and good flow. This is for the tank I have planned in my head and would be divorced if I ever set up! :) ;)
