THERE! I DID IT!
I mentioned the P**s word!
Cue an abundance of cat pics .........
Try and keep the thread for your 'good to great' pics, not just any old random snaps :)
In the meantime, have a look at Henry, he is a King Charles Spaniel.
Not mine but a bundle of fun (and fluff)

Some hints and tips for shooting your pets (or animals in general).
1 - Eye contact with the camera is key and beneficial.
2 - Get down and dirty, laying on the floor to shoot the animal at eye level produces great pics.
3 - Mainstay of focus should be the eye.
4 - Use a shallow depth of field (f/3.5 - f/5.6) to keep the focus on the important bits.
5 - If you have an animal you can play with, action shots are great, use a fast shutter speed and natural light (preferanly behind you) are beneficial so you can keep the ISO low (take your camera out when you go for a walk with the dog, give the lead and stick to someone else).
6 - Avoid direct flash if possible. Use an off cam flash if it is needed. If you can't do either, then try and muzzle the flash as to not blow your highlights, you can use an old 35mm flim canister (white) cut to size, inserted over your on cam flash as a diffuser, failing that try with some cloth, a thin sock/tissue over the flash.
7 - Use flash with rear curtain sync to get some cool action shots of your pet whilst playing, running etc.
8 - Wait until you pet is snoozy or sleepy to get close up detail shots, avoid flash if you want a quiet life. A flash will distract the animal and therefore you may only get one chance, with the flash off and a wide aperture you can happily snap away while the pet is still, even at slower shutter speeds.
9 - Timing, you probably know your pet and its habits best, use that know how to predict when it "does that thing, that it always does" or "wait until it's being told off , then snap its sad 'puppy dog eyes reaction'. Knowledge of your pets and their habits will give you an advantage over any professional you pay to take your shots for you.
10 - A telephoto lens, or at least a decent zoom will catch your pets when they are at their most unassuming and they don't have 'mam or dad' poking a camera in their face, you can shoot from your settee.
11 - Metering - Use spot metering for most shots, however, metering is a huge topic in itself, but make good use of it so you don't blow the highlights.

RIP kitty,

An old pocket sized automatic cameral - never take a decent camera into a field full of horses, especially if Hazy is present... horse slobber and teeth don't do 'em any good!

Never been fond of cats; if any animal, other than humans are guilty of constant arrogance, it's cats!
Here are my two dogs, they're both high breed line pedigrees and are both working dogs.

@ Luke, interesting pets, a break from the norm. pic#1 - is that chicken dead? #2 that chicken is either missing a head, or it's a pic of it's arse? #3 - you've blown the highlights on that pic, check your metering before you shoot, # 4&5 - good pics, nice DoF :)

Fantastic - do you work them?
Not a the mo, been trying to breed them. We really haven't got the space here so the idea was to get a youngster from them and sell the adults as a pair to someone with more space. Can't fly one without the other as they are a bonded pair now. The female has taken a 3lb hare. We get them out and exercise them in the garden but only on a line, too many hazards for free flying here, shame really.
Nice, what a refreshing change, plus it's a bird that will beat the cr*p out of a cat, how cool is that!

1 & 2 are good, last one is OTT imo, it looks too false, interesting concept tho :)
Yes there was that many pups, I hand fed them all for 8 weeks! the last one was done in sections and joined together for a centre picture in the paper.

Kiyo - My Cocker X Japanese Spitz...in case you're wondering, she is female...although everyone mistakes her for a male.
Her intense stare is because the camera was set to timer and the beeping noise woke her up!

Very nice Keith, any sign of a tank yet?
A couple of our dogs - first two were taken last October when the Newf was about 1/3rd of her way into a diet. The last two were taken in October this year when we finally got her weight down from the 85kg when we got her as a rescue down to a target weight as set by the vet of 60kg. Slimmer of the year?
