View Full Version : Sunday ramble.
Decided to take a walk around Hornsea Mere and surrounding countryside today. Managed to get a few nice shots though it wasn't easy with an energetic jack russell tugging at his lead.

Cheers Dave. Its the Nikon Coolpix P5000. It has most of the features a DSLR has but in a compact body.
Bonjour
I have a few things to say about the pics if thats ok? They look like snapshots. If they are supposed to be then thats fine, if you are looking to take some pics that you could hang on your wall, i will point out the following.
None of the pics jump out as having good composition, they look like they have been held at arms length and the shutter button pressed. The Coolpix has a viewfinder if i'm not mistaken, as well as a live view? I would suggest using the viewfinder if you are not already, it gets you more 'involved' with whats going on.
In the last pic, the sky is blown, its all white, with no contrast. This is because of the limited dynamic range of certain cameras, you are shooting (focusing) towards a shadowy area, therefore you camera uses its metering and decides what settings would be best for that particular area, it will increase the aperture and maybe even the ISO to compensate for the dark areas. As a result the highlights (in this case the sky) get blown.
The best pic out of them all is the iris pic, however, i can even pick fault with this. Shooting down onto things (flowers, insects, animals etc etc) never produces a good result, for a nicer pic, next time try and shoot the profile of the flower, i.e. get 90 degrees to it, maybe even fiddle with the aperture (if your cam lets you) to get a shallower DoF.
Hope you don't think i'm being too brutal, i'm just trying to give you an honest opnion, rather than the usual "nice shots mate". As always, these are just my thought, please feel free to ignore them, or contradict them :)
Yes, they are just snapshots, taken during a nice leisurely walk on a Sunday afternoon with the dog. I didn't go out with the intention of taking a masterpiece.

nice snap shots! :)
OMG Phil I showed these to my neighbour knowing he lived in the area, you have made him very nostalgic when he saw them:) He says he used to live in Leven and passed the Mere every day when he went to school in Hornsea. He asks are the photo's mainly in the fields along the Hornsea/Seaton road, if so then his brothers ex wife owns the garage/engineering place opposite.

P.A.D.....nice pics and thanks for sharing.......Claude, technically you are probably correct, but i'm sure plenty will read your reply and think why did you feel the need to do that?
Jon, Paul (Claude) has made justifiable and constructive suggestions as to how, should he wish to, Paul can improve his photography. He took care to say they are great snaps but if Phil aspires to greater things then he gave him pointers to think about.
Basically he was fulfilling his role as photographic advisor and IMHO doing it well.

Sanghy you could well be correct, but i do not recall reading any of P.A.D.'s comments asking for feedback, be it constructive or not (though i'm not convinced that is ideal constructive feedback as constructive feedback should inspire, not put down someone's efforts) he was merely posting pics for our viewing pleasure.

Hi, I spoke to Phil on MSN, and he gave me the go ahead to crit his pics before I posted.
Def: 'Constructive criticism' (often shortened to 'CC' or 'concrit') - is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one
did i not do the above?
feel free to offer points other than what i have said (like i qualified in my post)
:thanks: for your post tho jonathan, more often than not if you are thinking it, so are other people :)

I can copy this link into the Critique forum if you like Pad? Critique is very useful and Claude has given good advise.Obviously if an image is posted outside of the Critique forum the member may not wish for advise but as PAD has asked Claude for it its all good.

Well not being psychic i was not aware of the MSN conversation, though I do apologise if 'spoke' out of turn.

LOL Sanghy, its a small world isn't it. The photos were taken mainly on the opposite side of the Mere from where the Seaton Road is. However, this pic I believe is right next door to the garage mentioned. Its the Round House which is somewhat of a local attraction due to its unusual shape.

Jon, thanks for sticking up for me. :thumbsup:Its much appreciated mate. I've known Paul for a while and posted the pictures before I spoke to him on msn. I then gave the go ahead for him to criticise knowing perfectly well that he would, as much as possible, as he just can't help himself when he has a new hobby. Rest assured I will bide my time and get my own back.;)
Phil.

Paul i do apologise again....didnt realise it was like a sport with you two!!:playball:
Yes he remembers that ouse and has been in it once. He also says most of the mere and its surrounding woodlands/fields belonged to one man when he knew it. The wife kept it as a nature reserve, he wonders if that has changed?
