Well when my sister was 21 she got a digital SLR off my parents, they spent around £450 i think. i haveto say now though i can takean averageshotbut i'm no camera boff so i don't really know where to start.

I've been Looking at the EOS400d Cannon, aswell as the Nikon's.

At the moment i havean olympus, its an average camera but i can't take great macro's with it as i don't have the len's so i thought i'd just go for somthing bigger and better.

I'd deffinetly liek to get a maco lense along with the camera, so i'm looking for somthing between 450-480 with a macro lens in one of these models or another model u guys like, what i'd rather not have to do is upgrade again in a couple of years, so guys what can u do to help me? :)

Thanks

Tom

hiya,
its my 21st on the 20th and i too have asked for a camera.

i'm after a nikon , d40x or above. i think that the nikons potray colours much better than the rivals and have very crisp images.

pick up a digital camera mag, they have lots of comparisons.

Ok been looking around and the D40 seems bang on can get the camera for around £260 which leaves me with some cash left over to get a lens etc.

Theres some offers such as this one ... http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/574379/art/nikon/d40-black-af-s-dx-18-55-m.html

Where u can get a lens included, been looking tonight, mainly on amazon and been getting so confused with all the names for the different lens and tbhi have no idea what ones fit each camera or do all nikon lens fit all models?

I'm looking for a Macro lens, to take some really nice shots of my Acro's such as theones u see on here, i'm aware that it doesn't just come to u straight away, but i'm fairlygood with my olympus camera already, i just can't seem to get these macro's that i want since i don't have the lens.

Could someone point me in the right direction if they own a D40 or have some advice on it?

i migth venture into a shop in town tomorrow i just don't want them to feed me a load of bull and get as much money out of me without really telling me what there on about if u get me :D

thanks guys

Hi
I've got a D40 with the standard kit lens (18 -55mm) and the 55 to 200mm lens (as in the bundle in your link). The bigger lens is reall useful (portraits, wildlife, etc) and you can get some bargains with this bundle - worth shopping around.
I also have a tamron 90mm macro lens which is great for macros (!) but important to realise that it doesn't autofocus on the D40 - which is a pain for trying to photograph fast moving things like fish. You will pay a lot more for one that does autofocus which is why i compromised.
I would get the camera first and see what is possible with the standard lens and then think about the macro.

ps a proper flashgun (I've got the speedlight sb600) is also invaluable and you might find a bargain bundle with one included.

For what its worth I find auto focus a PITA when using a macro lens, I switch it off.

cheers claude.

NeilH i'm not looking at taking macr's of the fish especially more the slow moving inverts and the acro's which interest me more.

Does anyone know if u can get underwater casings for the D40's as i'm now a qualified scuba diver and taking my masters in it next yr, so that wud be an added bonous.

thanks for the help so far.

This is the macro lens I've got.

http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24_29&products_id=47

There is a 'macro' and 'fish' section on my photobucket link for some examples of what is possible with it attached to a D40.
Sorry don't know about a waterproof casing.

Underwater housing are available for the d40 but at a cost, just looked at first Google found and it was £800, there will be cheaper but I guess cheapest will be more than twice what you pay for the camera.

i'm actually not to bothered about the price of the underwater housing, iwon't need it for around another 2 years until i graduate (fingers crossed from uni) as a marine biologist and master acuba diver, then off to auzzi or somewhere to gain some experience in coralconservation and how they do it in the sea, as in coral fraggingin the sea. but thanks for the info its still alot of money :o hopefully it'll of come down by then :P

Wes - i've actually seen someof ure pictures before and i have to say i'm rather impressed so i'll follow the camera up thanks :)

NeilH - so far u've been a great help thankyou very much, u have some really quality shots.

when i first posted in this section i was abit wary on the numebr of replies u guys have been a great help thanks :)
