Shutter speed 800? With flash? If so thats one fast fish!

Do you mean ISO = 800?

Lets have a look at your Exif data

Looks like iso is about 800 to me with a little cropping maybe. As per Paul are you sure the shutter was 800?

You need to stick it in one of its user modes i.e shutter priority or full manual, you can then take control of your shutter speed.

not bad - black and white clowns are tough to meter correctly. Retaining detail on the white parts as well as the black is very difficult. In this shot, the forehead is 'hot' while detail has been lost towards the rear of the fish. The eye is not clearly visible which is a bit of a killer. Motion blur also a problem and DOF falls off towards rear of fish. Flecks on image look to be combination of backscatter and marks on glass and could be removed in PP. Composition is also off slightly - fish pics are generally accepted to be better composed with more space in front of fish than behind for various reasons but thats not a rule. Consider position of light source and shooting angle. These comments not intended to be negative by the way...

I have to agree, with a iso setting so high, you will get grainier pictures, it's like using a very fast B/W film, faster the film bigger the silver in the film's gelatine.

if you turn the "programme" dial aroundd to the TV (I am assuming the is the same as the D20) you can then turn the knulled control (usually on the front of camera) you can choose a speed to suit your requiremense the aperture for you. I like the Blak and White, the orange face shows well, mine have lost their orange colour.

your pictures are certainly not rubbish, remeber a lot of photographers would deliberately use extremely fast film deliberately to get the "GRITTY" GRAINY pictures.

Keep Shooting, but get a tripod, Alex

the noise could be due to using a high ISO or photoshop play.

FWIW, when i commented last night i was HAMMERED, and i could still see it ;)

Keep plugging away tho, you'll get there :)
