Well was aiming to get the Nikon D40 for my 21st but went to the camera shop today and came home with a second hand Pentax, a Macro Lense ( Cosina 100mm F 3.5 ) tripod and all the other bits and bobs for my 21st so all in all i'm one happy lad :)

so far taken some fantastic pictures both wih and without the macro, still gettingto grips with the macro as i've never done any macro photography before.

The question i have is; on the lense there settings whihc can be swivled round, start with A with a squiqqle above it and goes all the way round from 22, 16, 11, 8, 5.6 and 3.5. i have two questions firstly, what do these mean?

secondly if i move it from A it won't take the picture and in the view finder i see an F-- flashing at me? why is this can anyone help?

i can get some pretty nice shots with the A setting but feel as though i'm not making full use?

Thanks Tom

That's the ring you set the apeture with Red, the A is probably for automatic (Imm not famiiar with that camera so I may just be for Aperture priority but unlikely). The reason it won't make a picture when you switch it from A is that there is not enough light, maybe if you set it at one of the lower numbers it would be ok. (The lower the aperture number the more light is allowed through the diaphragm) The 'F' is flashing in your to tell you that flash is need to expose the photograph.

What made you change your mind regarding camera?

Click the link below and download the Pentax K110 D Manual as I take it you didn't get one with your camera.

well i belive its around the same spec if not slightly better? they had a macro lense there, and my sister already has the same camera so i was aware of some of its qualities, so if iput the flash upit'll work? i'mnot the biggest fan of flash photography in macro but ill go give it a go now :)

Try setting the aperture to 3.5 and then see if the flash pops up automatically. If it doesn't have a read through the manual the flash may be disabled somewhere in the settings.

Im not familiar with the camera but id advise picking up a decent book on digital photography. The flash might not be firing in any other mode other that Auto due to the settings used.Until you understand Aperture, shutter speed and ISO its not really worth taking her out of Auto mate.
