View Full Version : Canon 90-300mm any good?
As above is it any good? The canon 70-300 sells for around 300 but the 90-300mm for around 110. Why such a big difference am I missing something?
It's for a canon 350D if that makes any difference. I intend to use it for motor sport mainly.
:thanks:

Found the answer to one question. The 70-300mm is a USM IS lens. So apart from the price anyone go any views on the 90-300mm above?
Its one of their Budget lenses, IIRC they don't have the USM for quick near silent focusing, they just use a micro motor which is slow and noisy compared to the USM.
Optical and build quality will also be buch lower than the IS version but then the same can be said when comparing the IS USM version to the L version as well.
This is one of those times when you realy do get what you pay for. If I was buying on a budget I may be tempted to look at the same lenses from Sigma and Tamron.
If budget is not an issue then get the IS lens, you wont regret it.

there are very few lenses that have performance that defy their sale price, especially when you're looking at telephoto lenses. It's not just the lack of build quality or IS which can be easily ignored if you've bought something cheap, more than anything it's the optical quality.
Having said that there's nothing to say the 90-300 wont perfectly suit your needs, I have a budget Tamron 70-300 which I think is excelent value for money. The best thing to do is check out some lens reviews on the internet, cheap lenses are almost always going to have a down side, it just depends how serious you are about your photography as to how far you want to go.
here's some lens review sites:

Thanks to all
I was recommended the tamron 70-300mm, just thought I'd look around. I'm not seriously into photography so a 300+ lens is not really money well spent. I'd not use it to its full potential, or use it enough to justify the original outlay.
