Had a trip out today to Tropical World in Leeds. http://www.roundhaypark.org.uk/tropical-world-leeds/

For the princely sum of just £3 you get to walk around several tropical glasshouses where butterflies & birds fly about freely. There are several water cascades and pools where cichlids swim alongside koi carp, and terrapins laze about on the rocks. There are loads of other exhibits in enclosures, my favourite of which had to be the meerkats. This was then followed by a leisurely walk around the landscaped gardens and surrounding Roundhay park. All in all I thought it made an enjoyable afternoon and great for those with kids.

Here's some pics I took along the way.

Did you notice if they keep leaf-cutting ants there? (parasol ants from South/Central America)

Yes, they do have the ants, though I didnt see any. However, their presence was evident from the state of some of the plants. I assumed at first that it must have been caterpillars doing the 'damage' but then I read about the ants.

Why is it the grass is always greener on the other side. I grew up on the other side of the road to canal gardens and i have not been there in ages will have to put that right this weekend.

What?! They haven't got them contained? They're nuts. I spent 7 years working with the little blighters and spent a lot of that time stopping them escaping and destroying everything they could get to. Had a monster colony of about a million that used to regularly escape from the ant lab, walk 100 yards down the road and raid the gardens/trees, taking almost anything green. Used to frighten members of the public who were stunned by these huge ants walking around...Nasty bite too. They 'ate' my Doc Martens!

LOL, well put it this way I certainly didn't see a separate enclosure housing them. Whilst walking round the butterfly house we noticed in one part how ragged their palms looked and assumed at the time that it was caterpillars that were responsible. However, later looking at their online guide it said that the leaf cutters were in the butterfly house so I assumed from that that they were free range.
