As above really, I have a Nikon D80 and want to get some really good close-ups in my tank.
I went to a well known photographic store and they couldn't understand what I wanted to do and advised me to use my telephoto lens.
I think what I need is a macro lens - but which one is best??????
Thanks

105mm really as its incredibly sharp, however 200mm is very beautiful lens too plus gets you extra long focal length. if i could i'd have both:D

thanks - pointe dme in the right direction at least. Will pop out and have a play with a couple of lenses in the shop....
I use the 105mm AF-S VR. Its a great lens and I use it a lot. The stablising function is a little gimicky...I rarely use it.
Remember that the D80 will have a 1.5x factor on the focal length of any lens in question with respect to 'traditional' values.
You may want to consider some other options :
60mm Nikon macro lens
90mm Tamron macro lens
50mm f1.8 Nikon standard lens and extension tubes
The important thing might be to find another camera dealer who is prepared to invest some time with you in return for the sale.
You might find that the popular internet choice is not ideal in your situation and a poor choice at the cheapest price available is akin to money wasted.
the 90mm Tamron macro lens is a great budget macro lens
