Very nice mate, what settings did you use?
Nice flowers but IMHO it's not a decent shot. There's just too much going on: the guy in the seat, the kitchen door, the glass bevels in the mirror, partially clipped flowers all around the frame, the lack of an obvious focal point in the picture, the light effects from the over-exposed window, the intruding top of the vase. Having looked for a while I can't really see a decent crop either but that's probably more about my lack of imagination rather than anything else.
A portrait of the best orange bloom, with aperture wide open to separate it from an out of focus background of the yellow flowers would give all the range of colours and be a better photo IMHO.

Looks like you had the aperture wide open looking at the exif data i.e 2.8.As mentioned either take a close up pic of one flower or use the long end of the zoom to help throw the background out.Looking at the exif data you used the camera at a wide angle end of the zoom, its reporting a focal lentgh of 7.8mm? This wont help throw the background out even at 2.8.Also as mentioned the window has fooled your metering system, try taking a shot away from the window or meter on the window and use fill flash to light the flowers.

:thumbsup:thankyou for the constructive critism i must admit it was the central piece that i quite liked,i am very green when it comes to all the technical goings on with the camera,i only have a fuji s7000 at the minute,i am wanting to upgrade to maybe a canon 350d or similar, but i think i need to learn more about lighting shutter speeds and composition before i chuck nearly 500 quid at a good camera, even as good as they are they will be seriously impeded by the numpty holding it lol,i have a large selection of photograhpy books to edify myself,so i guess keep reading and have a good play with all the settings and facilities of the "basic" camera i have at the minute, once again thankyou for the input:worship:regards mikk
edit,i will have a go at cropping the "central piece" to try and show what i mean lol

It will always be more difficult to throw out the background using a compact or bridge camera even at 2.8 due to the sensor size. Its all to do with smaller sensor size and the the circle of confusion.
Have a read if you get bored and i mean bored lol.

Do yourself a favour when you're next in a garden centre/diy store and buy a piece (or 2) of slate. It makes a nice neutral/random/natural background against which to photograph things.
You don't have to worry about background clutter then :D
How about cropping it down to highlight on just part of it like this. If it's a high res image then you have a bit to play with.
