View Full Version : Canon lens compatibility with DSLR
I still have my old Canon EOS 100qd with loads of kit including a 28-70mm lens(non USM) and 100-300mm (USM). Just wondering if anyone knows if they would fit a current generation Canon DSLR ?
I could sell the body on Ebay, although not for much by the looks of things. But it could go some way towards buying a new body.
:thanks:

are the canon lenses an FD or EF fit?
if an EF fit they should be fine on a canon dslr.
if the FD then i think not.
i have a canon 10D and was looking at prices on ebay recently,
you can get a good condition canon 10D body for about £150ish a lot less that i payed for mine 4 years ago

Thanks Dave,
Yes they are both EF's
Was a little unsure and can't find anything on the Canon website about this subject.
£150ish for a 10D body, more than I thought :) Goes some way to a new (2nd hand) DSLR body.

a canon 10D body is a DSLR....
unfortunately a 100QD will only fetch about £30
so i'd keep it as a back up body

Hi Ridgeway,
I am a photographer (part time) and my setup is Canon based. I can confirm for you that if your lenses are all EF fit, then yes they will all fit to Canons current line up. The only exception is some of the old Sigma lenses made for the Canon EF fit, but these can be re-chipped to work. This is one of the biggest advantages to going into Canon digital photography-you get to use all their older but high quality lenses!
Before you buy your body, I'd recommend going to a local camera/computer store and taking a look at the Canons in the flesh. Pay attention to the grip-make sure its comfortable (some of the budget models are built a little smaller, and the lack of grip is something I find annoying). But then I have hands the size if a gorilla! LOL! Seriously though-stick with Canon and u wont go wrong. Nikon are also good-but as u already have a few lenses, u might as well make use of them as digital lenses are expensive ( i recently forked out £400 for a macro lense....ahem...that hurt the wallet! LOL!)
If you have any questions then please feel free to PM me and I'll get u the answer.
Best of luck, look forward to hearing from you!
just to add to what party has said.
remember the 1.6 magnification factor with DSLR's so it's worth getting the kit lens for wide angle stuff.
DONT buy a 10D they are not compatible with the new EF-s Canon lenses.
the 20D onwards are fine however.

Thanks Matt, yes I am going to stick with Canon especially now that I know that I can use my 28-70 and 100-300mm EF's that's great news :D
See what you mean about the small body sizes of the low end DSLR's. I couldn't believe it when I saw a 400D yesterday, it looked like a toy compared to my current 100QD.
Will have a look on Ebay and see what's available.
Might also look for a newer standard lens to replace the 28-70 but with an F2.8 setting rather than the F3.5 non USM version that I have.
Long gone are my AE-1's.............
