Yes mate, In theory they shouldnt, but they always have for me not major scratches but enoughto see if you were looking. The tunze on the other hand never scraths at all.

I use a rod with a hobby blade on as all my magnets have scratched the glass in the past.

Usually sand gets in between and scratches the glass :(

IME, it's tiny specks of sand that get in-between the magnets and can scratch your glass.

Right royal PITA :annoyed:

Mag Float. I wanted the Tunze power mags but couldn't get them locally and a LFS had the mag floats in. Does a decent enough job on green algae but doesn't do much at all on even tiny spots of corralline.

This hobby really does like kicking teeth in :(

Second go at cleaning glass on new tank, tried to be sooooo careful, just had a look at it and there's a scratch that wasn't there before.

Magfloat by the way, that's it i give up with magfloats :(

JBL Floaty here. Doesn't leak so can be left in the tank. I do have scratches but I'm 100% convinced these are caused by the giant turbos that have a habit of surfing the glass and doing a fast swivelling movement to get rid of their detritus. This knocks quite loudly against the glass.

I always go across my glass and a fair share of the scratches are downward and appear between cleanings. So if you have giant turbos maybe point a finger in that direction. My normal turbos rarely go onto the glass and don't seem to have the same swivelling thing going on.

No Mate, but they have string attaching them, so easy to retrieve. To be honest the magnets dont come apart that easy anyway.

Do the pro's scratch the inside of their tanks, any tips for us mere mortals?

This has to be up there in the top 3 of major downers in this hobby, reckon i'm gonna have to put a mental block on,lol

Ditto
Unless you keep the mag cleaner away from the bottom of the pane you are always going to pick up sand. Stick to an old fashioned cleaner or use a credit card and get your arm wet.

Mag float and tetratec blade for me.

I looked in to the tunze a little while back, but couldn't justify paying that sort of money for a magnet!

So, magfloat down to within a couple of inches of sand and then use a blade of some sort for close to the sand?

I dunno about everyone else but i reckon using a blade will have more chance of scratching?!

I'm trying to forget about the scratch, then i read this again and it comes back to haunt me :annoyed:

I posted a thread about some lovely purpleline algae growing in my tank. Unfortunately, it spread to the front! I used a blad to clean the really hard stuff and I can't really say it scratched the glass at all!

What about day to day cleaning, you know the whispy light type of growth on the glass?

You can get a proper blade attachment that sticks to the back of a normal mag float or that type of cleaner, it works brilliantly, you dont even need to get your hands wet!

I wont post details up here coz the shop that i got mine from isnt a sponsor

Hi,

Do you reckon this would allow the use of as magfloat low down near the sand then mate?

No Mate, but they have string attaching them, so easy to retrieve. To be honest the magnets dont come apart that easy anyway.i had one of these, the magnets are strong but the one time it did drop off into the sand it took 30 mins to fully ensure that the pad was sand free:annoyed:gave it away:rolleyes:.i now use a magfloat with the blade attachment, takes 2 mins to clean 8ft front glass and both 2'x2' end panels,i do have scratches but that is down to my impatience:o

Yep these blade attachments are good, you can get right into the sand with it if you want as its set in front of the magnet a bit so if you stir up a bit of sand it doesnt really matter as it shouldnt get under the pad of the magfloat

With any bladed scraper just try to avoid scraping the silicone!

i use a hobby magnet..it doesnt have the crap velcro on the inside like others but consists of 2 blades....insted of getting cramp from going back and forth trying to shift the stubborn stuff its a simple 1 pass job and its off..i got mine off fleabay

I'm not alone:)

I've never had full confidence in any of the scrapers i've used, i'm forever lifting the front magnet off a bit to see if it's still clean :(

For me it's one of them 'Am i the only one' type things, come on own up, who else has put a scratch in their tank with a magfloat or similar?

This is what I use and you can get a blade scraper attachment that just clips over the outside. Very strong magnet - ideal for 12mm glass. Only downside is that it sinks!

I have been using a long handled scraper to clean down by the sand, about the bottom 2 inches or so, and using the magfloat for the rest.

If i keep the magfloat away form the bottom my confidence grows !

Me too - I recently added the blades to a new Mag Float - the best and cheapest thing I have bought for the hobby - a must for all.

Cleans right up to the base of the tank with very little efford.
Takes me 10 minutes to do my 10footer on three sides!:)

Do also have a Tunze magnet, buy I am not as ttrong as I used to be so now resugned to the cupboard.

Doesn't matter how careful i am, i still seem to scratch the tank!

Finally got the chance to use my easy blade this morning and i'm impressed :)

Lots more confidence doing the last inch of glass down by the sand. I'm using the junior version on a medium magfloat and one pass is enough to clean, good product.
