View Full Version : my first attempt at clone stamping...

SCOOB

... I wasn't trying to improve the image, merely clone stamp out as much as i could without going too far.

I think I have to work on my horizons (does anyone know how to get a square edged clone tool?)

and I really messed up the chrome rail.

Enough babbling, tell me what you think.

Not bad, you seem to be getting the hang of it. Heres my quick attempt. Its hard as its a low resolution pic-pm me and you can have my email address to send the original pic-I'll do a better version if u want.

Colours and photo is very flat-we need then more saturated and punchy to reflect the weather and location - so...:

Heres one I did last year, its of Auschwitz, note the mass of people and cars getting in the way of a good image.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q3/_MG_4247.jpg

So approx 20 hours of Photoshop later (and its still not finished but u get the idea!):

Before u ask-yes I am a part time photographer, been using Photoshop for 10-15yrs I think! So be patient and just practise!

Some good ones there Scott. Personally think the flower one was better before editing, but like the enhanced shaddow on the last one. The dragon fly is a nice shot too.

the flower is pants, i couldn't decide whether to have the green as the totla background or the black, so purely to experiment i did both. Not to make a better pic, just to practise some more.

as for the 'enhanced shadow' in the last one, not quite. I was hiding the 2 pool filter covers that were there :)

Well practice is the only way, I should send you some of my recent ones and see what you can do with them!

Lol, I thought the rock you'd cloned was mean to be shadow, makes sense - now as I see it as rock. :p

I think I have to work on my horizons (does anyone know how to get a square edged clone tool?)

Use the pen tool(draw a selection around the area you want to have a straight edge you are going to fill in)right click in the selection, click make selection, give it a feather radius of 1,switch to the clone stamp tool and fill it in,once your happy, goto select and click deselect.

If you wish to straighten the horizon right click on the eyedropper tool and select the ruler, click and hold down and drag across the the horizon(you don't have to worry about going from edge to edge, goto image, rotate canvas and select arbitrary, window pops up just click ok,finally crop the image.

Scoob, Emailed you the finished pic, its not perfect-but u get the idea. I removed the guy on top of the boat-to give it more balance and keep focal point. Heres a compressed version:

that's pretty good, i like what you did with the levels :)

how long did it take you out of interest?

About 15mins ish. I still dont like the horizon-I'd usually spend more time on it-making it look more natural

partyof5
11-09-08, 15:49
I'd also put some clouds in and ligthen the blueness-still not happy with it.

lighten I meant- oops

partyof5
11-09-08, 15:58
To answer a previous question that I missed. The Auschwitz pic, the clouds were taken from a different photo I had and superimposed in, not generated in photoshop as they always look crappy I think.

SCOOB
11-09-08, 16:02
purely cos i am still trying to learn, but, how comes you didn't do anything with the sea?

everything else looks different, bar the sea.

partyof5
11-09-08, 16:05
To be honest didnt think the sea was a problem. I did try lightening it a bit-but it made it look too fake. Time was the main factor-perhaps I'll have a crack at it at the weekend.
