hi guys

i have just purchased a canon 400d and think its awesome however the shots i took in RAW mode and saved to my SD memory card do not show up as being on the card in the printer shop any ideas why not?

is this the best mode to shoot in ?

sorry but i am very novice and want to learn

i understand that to zoom in on a certain section from a distance i need to use say a 70-200mm lens ?

i have the standard 18-55mm lens with mine

any advice please

heres some pics i took recently

By printer shop do you mean you have taken them to a shop for printing, or is printer shop a software application on your PC, either way it will be because the software does not recognise the CR2 file format that the raw files are in.

It may be better if you keep to jpg for now whilst learning about the camera and its functions, as using raw makes things a bit more difficult since you get issues with software recognising them, and they have to be manipulated in software to get things like white balance corrected, with jpg's this is done by the camera for you.

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know the last date to get the money back offers in for canon products? I bought a 400d a while back, when it had £50 cashback, and me being the forgetfull type, have forgot all about it until I read Ians thread.

Hi Ian,

Macro shots are generally just close upshots, you could narrow this down but in most day to day terms macro is just a close up shot.

Telephoto lenses have a long focal length, meaning distant object appear larger than to the human eye - bird spotting, sport shots etc.

I'd suggest keeping to the P mode (as above keeping to jpg) for a while and mess around with the ISO and White balance settings and see how it affect the images paying note to shutter speed and aperture values. I did this for some time now take most of my tank shots in fully automatic mode so i can balance out shutter speed and depth of field. That the best thing with digital if you get crap shots - who cares just delete em, great for experimenting.

I bought myself a "how too" guide book for my 350d off amazon, which really helped me actually understand what the different settings do and how they affect images. MUCH more useful than the instruction manual.
I'd stick with the kit lens for now, its not the best but is ok as a start, then when you decide what you want from a new lens shop around to find what you want.

Hope this helps

I think the camera is ace, coming from point and shoot, I took it on holiday with me, was a little worried about doing that, but did it anyway, glad I did, never ever have I had such great shots, The best to date is one I got of my daughters, the baby, was in her baby walker thing, and our other daughter was stood behind and over her, I just happen to be playing with my new toy, and got a great shot, its now on canvas, in our home, the kids 2 nans and great nans, the lens for that shot was the standard one, the only other lens I have is the tamron tele 200mm one that was on offer at the time.
But I really want one of the macro lens people on UR use to get really detailed lps and sps coral close ups, anyone out there give us a pointer??

Close ups using a macro lens

The cashback offers change so you will need to look at the canon site to see what the current offer is.

Tamron 90mm macro or Canon 100mm macro

I just bought a 40D and the sales ticket in Jessups had the closing date as early september, which was about a week before I bought the camera.

Back on topic

When shooting in RAW mode you will need a special RAW mode Viewer software or RAW plug-in for you favorite software program.

Look on the discs that came with the camera, it should have zoombrowser which will show the RAW files on your SD Card.

There's also a plug-in for XP/Vista to allow you to view them directly from disk.

Canon Photo Professional also comes on those disks. I'd recommend this as well as it offers a lot of the post processing tools you'll need.
