View Full Version : Salinity for Seahorse's.
Hi,just a quick question.
Everything i've ever read about Seahorse's,say's salinity should be 1.023.
That's what i've alway's kept mine at since setting up.
But NSW is 1.025,so why do we lower it,if it's not in tune with nature basically ?
Julie.
Seahorses can tolerate very varied levels of salinity almost to brackish levels. Some people reccommend keeping s/h at a lowered salinity as it is believed to lower stress. I think one theory is that parasites etc do worse in a less than optimum salinity so the seahorse may stay healthier. I personally have kept seahorses at varying salinity (stable but different in different tanks) and never actually noticed a real difference.
Hi Julie
I used to keep mine in NSW @1.025 and they used to breed regularly which i would imagine they would not do if they were not happy.

I've always kept mine at 1.022 - 1.023 and mine have also bred every 4 weeks :)
mine is 1.024 all the time but i only keep it that high because i have a few corals but i am sure they would be fine at lower
