View Full Version : Which photo printer
The wife wants a photo printer and there are so many to choose from, wondered which ones some of you guys use.
She only wants to print standard sized photos. At the moment I am looking at some of the HP ones but can't decide on which one.
HP or Epson not a great deal in it really, The HP cartridges last longer in my experience , however make sure you buy a top quality paper 260 gsm
I would avoid Epson like the plague if I was you. I've got an Epson printer and I can't wait to get a replacement. (It's not even that old)
It's their ink that annoys me most. My printer has chips on the ink cartriges and they have some sort of built in timer that runs out after a few months, and has to be replaced even tho most the time theirs still loads of ink left! Waste of money.
BTW my printers an RX425 Photo printer.

Canon printers are also very good. Mags always have reviews on printers so check out a few (pc and photo)
Depends what you want ?
If it's the quality of printed image then Epson is the way to go, but agree that cartidges are not the best or cheapest, but the result is clearly the best !
Between HP and Canon, I'd find it hard to choose.
I guess in the end you have to set your budget and look around and anyway you'll only get the quality advantage that some of the better models offer if you shoot High Res 300dpi images.
PS: I use a Epson R265 6 colour device
Thanks guys, some good tips and will look into some of those. One of the guys at work has a Which subscription, guess i could give that a go as well.
As for the cost, somewhere around the £100 mark is what I would look to spend.

Not quite how they work
They don't tell you you have no ink after a timed period.
The printer uses ink for cleaning cycles, which it will do every time the printer is turned on and after a set number of prints and after changing any one of the cartridges. and as most of them only have 15ml of ink per cartridge you can see why you don't get many prints to a full set of carts.
The best way to improve the amount of prints is to do all your printing in one go. I got 30 A3 prints ot of mine doing this. or fit external ink tanks, I have just done this to my 1400.
Still if quality is an issue then Epson printer, Epson Paper and Epson inks is a very good place to start, although the others Canon and HP are now catching up.

I have owned the following Epson printers and could not fault any of them.
600, Photo, 1270 x2, 1290 x2, 1400, 1800, 2100 and 360, I now use the 360 and 1400 daily
I have used Canon (current) and Epson and they are both good, however With any printer you need to use the manufacturers paper and ink to get the best results - unfortunately this means expensive.
You can get away with good quality third party ink and even paper, I use both and are acceptable for general photo's, but they are not the same quality as OEM.
When I want a higher quality photo I will use proper Canon paper as I find the paper has a bigger impact than the ink.
Another thing to consider is the software that you will l use to print the photo's, some are a pain to use, others are dead easy.
More info than you wanted but things to consider.

ummm... mine does exactly that :) Sometimes I don't use the printer for a few months and it needs changing after some text prints! And theres still loads of ink left.

I have an RX425, I have owned other printers without fault but this one is naff! I don't know how they can get away with it?
You sound like you work for Epson Paul-H?
Thanks guys some more to consider, the guy at work is going to have a look for me today.
Mr Fish - all valid points and something I hadn't thought of but will now when making the choice.
Paul-H - Thanks for the tips on printing, will try and follow that advice.
I've got a Canon MP610 multi-function at home (scanner/copier etc) and it's pretty damn good on edge-to-edge a4 pints as well.
Just make sure, as stated you use the manufacturers inks. Paper wise, I actually picked up some really good quality Tesco own brand 260g paper a while back and the results were indistinguishable from Canon Photo Paper Pro.

Err epson dont make the pixma range Canon do. the 4300 is also a canon printer.
Epson make better printers in the £200+ range. but in the sub £100 catagory the canon Pixma range are head and shoulder above the rest. try and find another printer that duplexes for instance.
our faithful old ip4000 has given up the ghost after 6 years of hard work( we print a quarterly newsletter 100 copies of 8 pages double sided)
have just ordered an MP610 to replace it from canons ebay store to replace it £70 delivered. Just put in a bit above £60 and then wait for the second chance offer e-mail.:D
