is it advisable to use a skimmer in a seahorse tank ive been setting up a new tank my old tank had a small skimmer but this one seems to put a lot of flow in the water also can anyone tell me is it ok to slow theflow on a fluvel 305.i have had the tank up and running for 5 weeks now but am worried about moving them.im going on holiday for 3weeks son looking after them so i didnt think it would be the best time to move them.after losing steve last week the others have settled down and are breeding again.also would it be alright to put barbouri in with my reidi or should i keep seperate tanks.:thanks:ps baby still going well

Hi - great news about the baby still doing well.

I would always suggest using a skimmer in a seahorse tank - seahorses actually produce a lot of waste. I don't see a problem reducing the flow on a 305, I run quite a few canister filters and some of those have been running on half flow for a long time.

As they have settled down now (good news) can you not wait until you have returned from holiday before you move them? If you're putting them all into a brand new tank you could really do with being there to monitor water params in the early stages.

Given a choice I would keep the barbouri seperate from the reidi. Some people will mix seahorse species but its generally not advisable. Some species can carry pathogens that, while not affecting them, can affect other species.

Excellent news regarding the fry:thumbsup:

Not much to add really other than I too use a skimmer on my seahorse tanks, after seeing the gunk it pulls out I would'nt be without one, Also agree with sail regarding keeping the barbouri and reidi together, its not something i would do myself.....

Hi

I had the reservation of using a skimmer that could remove valuable material from the tank, so i decided on a compromise and i used a seaclone small airstone skimmer and i was well happy as i felt it was not overdoing the tank
