View Full Version : are durso's really silent
heard that durso's can be noisy, is this true? if so whats the best set up for weir pipes?
I think the twin stand pipe method is the way to go for a quiet set-up - Durso's are quiet, but require a bit of tinkering to get right
so if built correctly then durso's are quiet or the twin stand pipes are always one up on the dursos?
I had a Durso to start, but found that it would n't take the same flow rate as the equivalent straight stand pipe, so that was bug-bear number one. Number two was that it was never truely quiet, there was still some noise from the drain side caused by either too much air or not enough - never got to the bottom of it.
If I had to do it again, I would go straight to twin pipe, forget Go and £200....
why oh why didn't I do this poll before I new tank was built :) mind you anythings gotta be quieter then my current tank
my durso is silent but it was/is a pain to set up. Never tried the twin pipe method yet.

My durso was silent from the begining, havnt tinkered or anything. Guess im just lucky:whistling:
mods you can remove this thread if you like, as GSX has started a poll regarding the same question
I got twin weirs with twin durso's and have no issues at all and i do not have to keep playing with them and mine run silent.
Its all in the planning and setup, if done correctly there is no reason why it can not be as quite and reliable as the twin pipe version.
i use the twin pipe method but the higher overflow is a durso,i think you just need a slightly slower flow through a durso

I have a durso stand pipe, very quiet, if anything the return breaking the surface water makes more noise, no tinkering straight pipe 2 90' bends and drill a hole, sorted
My latest durso was silent from the start.
My previous tank had a durso that required a great deal of tinkering to "tune it in", but was eventually silent.
I found the tank end of my durso was quiet, but the sump end was really noisy with the air bubbles, my twin standpipe was totally quiet at both ends.

i have LR rubble in the drain end of my sump and the little noise that i did have caused by bubble has now gone completly HTH
Since I did mine I found this thread: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1291360
in-sump durso, eliminates the bubbles at the sump end so can make a durso quiet at both ends.
my durso is almost silent, more noise from my skimmer and the output of the fluidized sand bed filter.
the noisiest thing in my tank is the return pump we are now officially AT WAR
I agree with Aquadorge. I tried the Durso setup first but had no end of hassle trying to get it be quiet. Sure there is no noise of air being sucked in, but then you have sound of water gurgling into the sump. The two standpipe method is the only way to guarantee a quiet setup.

Initially ran with a Durso style arrangement but found the noise a little distracting.
I'm now set up with a twin standppipe arrangement with both pipes emptying wll below the surface level in the sump.
I now have zero bubbles coming through and completly silent running.
I think I've mentioned it before, the noisiest thing in my tank is the timer for the sump light!!!
Twin stand pipe was easier for me to setup, required no real fiddling with flow rates etc.

heard that durso's can be noisy, is this true? if so whats the best set up for weir pipes?
mine were dead quiet, had to remove 1 and replace it twith a standard stand pipe as i was starting to get a awful build up of filmy type stuff on the top of my water
my durso is almost silent, more noise from my skimmer and the output of the fluidized sand bed filter.
Snap .... my Tunze stream pumps make more noise!
Gaffer
Mine very quiet but it is a Fit filtration tank so the weir is covered with glass.

I put my system together my self, the main problem is with the size of the hole in the cap on top of the pipe, this has to be done in stages, as the size of the hole will reduce the noise level, so start small, and go up in size until you achieve what you are after. :D

Mines very quite played around for while. But very happy with noise or lack of it.

Yes they are silent if built properly...sadly many dealers and DIY'ers forget the main rule that you must have a wider stand pipe than the bulkhead diameter at the bottom of the tank..
In many cases it stays the same size all the way through, which is why they make a racket.
