Hi,
I am looking at buying a Canon EOS 450D, particularly like the IS lens idea, I have never had the steadiest of hands, so any comments as to suitability as a starter DLSR ??, or any suggestions to something similar around the £400 mark, I have seen Jessops price:

Just to say I have done some 35mm photography before and am selling my Dad's kit;

I am aware I should pick up and get a feel for which one suits me, just want an opinion if the Canon is a good starting point to build a kit up from, lenses, flash etc.

check out warehouse express they are usually better price than jessops.
I got a 350D and love it. Never had a play with the 450D but I'd recomend cannon stuff.
Canon's system is the best on the market (it's why 90% pro's use canon)
however your not a pro and likely never will be so try the canon and the Nikon and pick whichever feels the best to you. i would avoid Sony as there camera's are cheap but the rest of there kit is overpriced compared to canon and nikon.
that said the 450d is a lot of camera for the money. I would not get to hung up on the IS bit it's really not that useful on a standard kit lens. Other features are far more important.

Cheers Guys,
The only thing I am unsure of, if I go for the Canon, is that I am limiting myself as to what lenses I can buy (IS) , I could "possibly" stretch to the Nikon D90, would that be more flexible in lens choice and add on's?.
Or would the Nikon D60 with 18-55 ED II + 55-200mm ED Twin Lens Kit £479.99, be a better bet.

If camera shake is really that big an issue for you perhaps you would be better of with aSony camera where it is built into the body not the lens. The extra cost of sony lens would be ofset by not having to buy all IS lenses. However body IS is not as good as lens IS for several reasons.
in general camera shake can be avoided by using a heavier camera or adding a battery grip (or both) It can be eliminated entirly however by using a tripod.
My advice would be get the 450D and a battery grip and a half decent tripod. If you intend to take a lot of pics indoors then a flashgun will be worth getting as well.
the D90 is a more profesional camera than the 450D but don't fall into the trap of thinking it will take better pictures. the extra money would be better spent on a good quality lens(don't buy any of the two lens kits there are better lenses availible from the likes of sigma/tamron etc.)
there are 22 lenses availible from canon of Warehouse express that have IS built in Nikon will be similar i imagine. Canon has better backwards compatibility however as any Eos lens from the last 20 years will work. Nikon is a bit more complex as older lenses don't work on some of the new cheaper models due to lack of camera motors.
Therefore there are more second hand canon lenses availible than Nikon.
Overall both canon and nikon systems have everything availible that a normal photograher could want. the extra stuff that canon do over nikon is very specialised and you will never need it. Sony's system is not as comprehensive but is being expanded all the time. pentax and olympus's systems are limited and should be avoided for this reason.

Hi Roddy,
hand shake is not a major issue, I don't expect I will ever be David Bailey:o, just didn't want to start off on the wrong foot, I think I will go the Canon route either the Canon 40D, 450D or the 1000D, if I go for the 1000D it will give me more dosh for a tripod and add on's.
Thanks for everybodies responses, I need to go and get my hands on some of these and see which suits me. :thanks:

1000d is not very good go for the 40 or 450d. I have to 40d with 100-400mm IS as i do wildlife photography and with IS you don't need to lug a tripod around.
The 450d doesn't mean you have to just have IS lens' you can just use any canon af fit lens.
don't buy a 1000d it's worse than the 400d better to pick up a second hand 400d and spend the dosh on a lens. The 450d is a great camera but the 40d is the mutts nuts. Picked one up SH on ebay for £420 without lens. bargain.
As Luke says if a lens says EOS on it it will work with any EOS camera, it's that simple.
