Here is something I have discovered. You might have already, but anyway………..

I have a Canon D20, I have fitted to this a Metz
45CL - 4 DIGITAL Flashgun. OK. A good kit? Yep, it seems to be fine, BUT on my lenses I have the standard filters, but I also have PLARISER filters, bearing in mind the flash has been connected to the cameras set on TTL (through the lens), I have also used the set in Manual mode. I have always had a hate relationship with the printing of the pics, so have generally chucked the camera in the corner and ignored it, on studio lights the images are fine sharp well lit across the board and tremendously different from the Metz’s flash pics.

I was in Cardiff on Friday, and took my camera to a shop there, and asked had I missed a setting up step or something???

NO

OH?

Polariser filter

Come again? Is not the signal from the lens transmitted to the flash gun???

YES/NO

?

The only information fed to the flash, is focal length aperture

B****Y HELL, I still find it incredulous, that as a professional set up, the addition of a polariser can throw a spanner in the works, as far as I am concerned, it SHOULD WORK, but in testing over the last day or so, it does seem to muck up the lighting when the filter is added, and if you look at the Histogram, when the filter is added, you get no detail in the white area, I have even tried to use a slower shutter, 2.8 instead 5.6 all to no avail.

So has anyone come across this paradox? Alex

What other settings you using? If you're not getting any detail in the white areas, you are over exposing. Start out with ISO 100, AWB, f8 - 11 (ish). Your shutter speed should be 100 I think (but anywhere from 60-150 should work fine), cant remember what the exact sync speed is. What are you trying to take pics of? Do you need the polariser?

Mainly general photography these days, no more wedding, sight prevents me from being confident in that any more.

I normally use the camera on manual, with the flash set at the same as i have used when using the Hassy, lens set at (for instance) 60 5.6 and the flash at 2.8. BUT i have done numerous tests using every setting on the two, to get a good overall balance. The polarisers are not needed in normaql use, i accept that, but you would have thought if the PF cut out two stops of light, then the flash information should have picked that up and compensated, IT DOES NOT

Confused myself now. Using the Canon 430ex works fine with a polariser. Havent worked with a Metz for a while but there are different adapters - some that work but don't pass all the info on so you wouldn't get ettl II.
