Right guys and gals!

After lots of naggng and deliberation here's the new forum.

One of the problems we encountered was what to call it!

We (the mods) don't like the current title but have gone with it for the purposes of getting something up and running.

Can we have suggestions from you guys please? Best suggestion to win a bag of mud (from my back yard).

Thanks in anticipation of a veritable smorgasbord of apt names! :)

Great news! As for a title for the forum, I would simply like to see it called 'Mud / Algae Filtration Systems'. :) Or even leave it as you have it as 'Ecosystem' Filtration. :o

Skimmaholics Anonymous - Hi my name is Rental and I abused Skimmers for 20 years. I have curently been Skimmer free for 2 months.

That's a lie ;)

How about "Natural Filtration Systems".

I like "Natural Sediment Filtration", "NSF".

:D

Or Fine Sediment Filtration - which could also include sand bed filtration methods

I like "Natural Filtration Systems", and then i thought some of us still use phosphate removers not sure does that qualify as 'natural'?

Also, do systems which don't use mud but say, use simply algae that grows on live rock, or maybe only live rock for filtration, fall under this forum? I.e. skimmerless systems?

There are numerous methods and combinations of methods used to run a reef tank. Trying to categorise them all to say which forum they should be posting in could be a potential nightmare. It is probably up to the poster - if s/he feels it is a system relying on mud and algae-bed based filtration, then great, get posting. If not, then there's the general filtration forum to post in. It's not a complete disaster if somthing is posted in the "wrong" place.

My understanding of the new forum was that it is just for a typical setup where the main element of the filtration system is like those used in the three TOTMs. A further example is (selfishly) my last setup, and hopefully my new one which is still on the drawing board.

I suspect most systems using just LR, or algae on LR, perhaps rely on weekly water changes etc, and perhaps fall into the nano with 3 or 4 chambers in a rear compartment - that is not what this forum is about IMO. It's filtration where the principal vehicle is a mud & algae bed.

I don't see the use of a phosphate remover as a make or break criterion either - if you need one, then use one! :)

Many thanks to the mods for setting the forum up.

Another forum used the title “natural reefing”, another possibility is “mud based systems”. Any name is fine provided it avoids product placements.

Thanks mods! "Natural Reefs" seems concise and should convey to most people what its all about - not just skimmerless or mud - but refugiums, crytic zones, ....etc ...etc.

The problem with "Natural Reefs" is if I was browsing the forum list and saw that I would be dissapointed to see a fish tank. I'd be expecting discussion of a "real" ocean habitat somewhere.

Natural reefs - well, the mud is said to not be from the sea based on compsition, so not so natural if that's true. Then again, what isn't natural - you may not use a skimmer but what about pumps?

Ecosystems - well, every tank is an ecosystem...

Mud and algae based filtration seems the best bet to me but will have a look through the posts.

How about "Organic Filtration"?
