View Full Version : Caribsea Mineral Mud
Well I received my 2 gallons (10kg) of Caribsea Mineral Mud today and on reading the instructions for use noticed that it recommends that you use a 1/2" - 1" 'cap' of live or dry aragonite sand over the mud. Does anyone else do this? If so what is the reason for it? My first thoughts were that this was to stop the mud from 'escaping' into the main display tank, but I also wondered whether this was something that helps with the way it works? Any suggestions?

Yep, I did this. It helps the mud settle and introduces lots of life into the bed. :)

Yep, Agree with Dan-the-man, make sure your Mud does not clog the filter and needed to be covered by another layer of sand maybe inches and half. This will stop your mud escaping and costing lots of money to replace.
I hope this will help.
As above it helps the mud settle and allows you to add life straight into the mud by using established sand. the cap mixes into the mud pretty quickly once you have critters in the sand/mud bed.
OK great. I will add a bag to my list of things to get then!
Just to add to this, is there a particular brand/type you would recommend? I was thinking maybe the Caribsea Aragalive sand might be worth a shot?

The sand ideally wants to come from another reefers tank or an LFS.
Yep, I also added a cap of live sand to my Mineral Mud.
we stuck acouple of cupfuls of our old bed in. we also put a 1cm layer of quite course gravel where the overflow is to stop it being stirred up. we also have a few pieces of LR in there. caulerpa seems to root to this in preference to the mud and it acts as a nursery for pods etc.
