i currently run open top with mh and thought i'd see what ur members use or dont
If you are using metal halides then the tank needs to be open or you will lose loads of light spectrum.

No lid just open top with suspended halides
lid as i have lost 2 fishies to not having lid
Open top with MH and T5,
Needed so that the Killer Whales can practice their SeaWorld routine and belly surf on to the overflow box:whistling:
Open top but soon to be almost completely eggcrated.
Open top but have 7mm x 7mm pond netting suckered in place as I have a firefish, my lighting is only 2 x 24w T5's and 1 x Marine white aquaray.
No cover on my tank or the kids nano tank.
No cover, with metal halides and T5 blues

looks like we all rideing open top so far
bump
i have acrylic covers and a hood, also twin 150w halides and t5s, no probs:thumbsup:
I use corrugated drip trays as sold by pets@home, pretty sure my banana (white belly) wrasse will jump and my pair of clowns may be jumpers too.
Light = 4 X 38W T5's.
We have a lid & T5s (4 of them at the mo). Very glad we have a lid too - got a few jumpers and 4 cats who when they're on their daily mad moment don't stop for anyone, people, tank, nothing - we'd have had a few wet cat incidents!
Amusingly, one of them did jump on to my fresh water tank whilst I had the lid off for cleaning - she was spread eagled balanced on the edges of the tank with her belly & tail dipping in the water - very funny!

@ Those of you using eggcrate
Does this create any unwanted shadows in the water ? Sounds a good idea to keep the heat of the tank down in the summer.

egg crate is used as a light diffuser... it is accually made for drop ceiling lighting

i think this sounds about right, my 25g open top with 4x24 t5's needs about 1.5-2ltr RO top up daily. there is quite a lot of surface movement, maybe it adds to evaporation too.
re condensation we don't have any problems yet, i think because there is a window right next to the tank which is open 24/7.
No lid open top with suspended halides.
Converted aqua-one 980 with original lid 3 t8s and converted rear lid with 2 HO t5s
Almost no evaporation
seems bright enough for me grows montipora, hammerheads mushrooms
