Hi peeps
Basically my son wants a camera for chrimbo, easy peasy you may say but there are a few problems.
My son is disabled and as such only has use of his left hand, this makes most cameras an arse to use as the shutter button is on the right.

Anyone know of any digital cameras that come with or have a remote shutter available for them. His budget will be 150 quid max and the camera will have to go on a tripod so he can use the remote with his hand.

Thanks for any advise/ideas,Tony

Hi,

Sadly I can't find any compacts that come with or even have remotes :(

It might be worth popping into a local camera shop and asking?

One option, which isn't ideal, is maybe a second hand Canon 350d or something similar from Ebay? I don't think that these go for much more than £150.

Hope you manage to find one! Sorry I wasn't much help!

any of the Fuji S series can have screw in remote shutter releases. I had an Olympus Camedia a few years back to, had an IR remote for that. I doubt they changed it.

Cheers Scoob,i forgot about the screw in hole in the button.Ill have a looky at the Camedia too.

Justin, thanks for that mate, may be an option but a 350 might be a little wasted on him,im sure he would love it though.

You can buy remote controls for different camera's

I have a Samsung NV10, which can be used with a tripod & remote, i think all the NV range are the same in this respect, not sute how much it was though

If you dont need a tripod could you get a mobile phone with a good camera on it?

Or something like this...

It sucks that in this day and age you still cannot buy a left handed digital camera. However camcorders are a different matter.

have a look at this.

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Camcorders/All%20Camcorders/products/Sanyo/Xacti%20VPC-CG9%20SD%20Camcorder%20(Black)-74040/Show.html (http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Camcorders/All%20Camcorders/products/Sanyo/Xacti%20VPC-CG9%20SD%20Camcorder%20%28Black%29-74040/Show.html)

it's a bit over you budget but as you won't need a tripod any more it should work out the same. best of all you get a camcorder as well. If you fancy pushing the boat out you can get an HD one from £400.

if your son gets more serious about his photography you can use a Dslr with battery grip left handed, it's upside down but that's easily fixed later on a PC.

Thanks for that Roddy, his motor skills aint great so itll probably have to go on a tripod ,that rules out mobile phones as he has trouble with small buttons too.
Ill see if they have any of those in store to look at and see if he can grip one.
The fugi S series dont seem to have the hole anymore on the cheaper ones so thats not an option.Saying that once its on a tripod he may be able to get to the shutter button. He wants a camera that looks like his dads if im honest with you so the fuji cameras are his favourite at the mo.
All the best Tony.

Many of the cameras that use an IR remote have the sensor on the front of the camera for self portraits etc ... might be worth bearing this in mind as it would be awkward reaching found the camera to fire it.

you used to be able to get a little bracket that screwed into the tripod socket and allowed you to use a mechanical shutter release but i've looked on ebay with no luck, might be worth contacting a shop to see if they can order one. that way you could use it with any camera and place the button where you like.

on the subject of a tripod could your lad get away with using a monopod? as it's only going to be for a compact it should provide enough support and can be used as a walking stick in between shots (even i use mine for a bit of support going up hills) i realise he won't be able to adjust the controls or leave the camera standing but carrying a tripod is going to be a real PITA as well. you do get monopods now with a little tripod at the foot but the very expensive unfortunatly.

the last option is one of the new flip cameras but i believe the quality is the same as a mobile phone.

Cheers Roddy i think i know what you mean, ill pop into a shop and see if they can get one.My son has Cerebral Palsy so his motor system isnt great,he is in a wheel chair so really needs a tripod and cant hold a monopod and fire the camera due to only having the use of one hand.
Every Christmas gets harder and harder to buy for,he wants what all the other 13 year old have but he just cant control them.

Ok the wheelchair makes it a bit different.

the bracket should still work but you will also want a pneumatic shutter release like this.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-Metre-Pneumatic-Shutter-Release_W0QQitemZ290273685771QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _Photography_Film_Cameras_ET?hash=item290273685771&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-Metre-Pneumatic-Shutter-Release_W0QQitemZ290273685771QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _Photography_Film_Cameras_ET?hash=item290273685771&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318)

that should make it easier to fire the shutter that the old fashioned cable ones.

I know you can get proper brackets for wheelchairs but they cost more than the camera does. Is there anywhere on the chair you could bolt on a plate or ball like this.
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/general/brackets/10Bar-Epok.html

and than buy a flexible arm like this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fantasea-Polycarbonate-Flexible-UW-Light-Strobe-Arm-12_W0QQitemZ140281990571QQcmdZViewItemQQptZFilm_Ca meras?hash=item140281990571&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

the other option would be to wrap a guerilla pod around the chair but i think it would get in the way of the controls. you should be able to get all the gubins for about the same price as a tripod but it would be way less hassle to use.

i also came across this site in my travels. these guys should be able to help.
