finally got my pair of barbouri arrived 25 nov safe and well a little on the cold side heat pack didnt work properly.i was very surprised to see the male whom i named spike was pregnant he and tina decided to spend the next week at opposite ends of the tank.anyway sunday morning went down at 5am as you do to find spike had been a busy boy and had 33to35 babies.i have put the babies in the nursery tank and after untangling them they seem to be doing well.im feeding them on rotifers and baby brine shrimp. what else can i feed them?i have kept them all as they all look nice and healthy.i have 4 reidi that are 14weeks old and some that are 2 weeks so that side is going well.spike and tina have already mated so i think they do like each other.is there anyone out there who want to take some fry on, i have reidi due in 4 days and i dont think i can keep all the barbouri and i dont like having to choose which to keep

Congratulation's,you are clearly doing something right,to have that success with babie's:)
I know ZM Fishfood's(sponser)have reported place's using their fryfood etc, with success with baby Horsie's,so could be an option,so you don't have to use so much live food ?
Hopefully, someone near you will be able to help out with babie's,wish i was nearer.
Keep up the good work,
All the best,
Julie.

Well done. I wish we had that much success with our Reidi babies. What exactly did you do and feed them on to rear them to that age? We fed ours on Rotifers, Copepods and newly hatched Artemia but then they got air in them and died. :crying:

hi joanna like you i lost all my babies and i got very upset i spoke to neil garrick-maidment of the seahorse trust,he suggested making up 5 feeds aday on baby brine shrimp but you need to do it from the day before their due arnie is every 12days regular as clockwork.i feed a mix of rotifers and copepods withvitazin in the water its suppossed to make them eat it does seem to help i have 5 culters of them on the go and buy extra in from reefphyto i also brought sanfrancisco strain brine shrimp its smaller then most the others and the babies can eat them from birth again topped up with vitazin.i feed five times aday and they have light at the bottom of the tank 16 hours a day.i use a ridged airline for the reidi and do a water change from dads tank from the first week twice aday.then a mix of fresh and dads.my main problem is housing different age seahorses and now different species. so far fingers crossed barbouris are doing really well.i also got a vial of stuff from brine shrimp direct dont know what it is but they seem to like it i think its dried rotifer i hope this answers your question and i hope that you get some of yours to surviveif i can get more to survive. denise p/s will post pics of babies when i can get some decent ones

Hi Denise

Thanks for that info. I have got Neil Garrick-Maidments books I'm sure. I'm going to look for some of the food you mention. Where do you get the Vitazin and the Sanfrancisco strain brine shrimps from? Also, what sort of light do you have at the bottom of the tank? That's partly where we went wrong as our babies gulped air from the surface. Sorry for all the questions. The main thing I might struggle with is the twice daily water changes as we're up at 6 during the week as it is. :(

I'd love to see pics when you have some. Thanks again and I might be back with more questions at some point if that's okay.

hi joanna i got the vitazin from my local fish shop.i brought the brine shrimp from t a aquaculture, click on utah eggs and its under artemia franciscana theres a large pot lasts forever and small packs.next year im off to salt lake and if you want any cans of brine shrimp i can get them there for £10 and i hope to get some rotifer cysts.i would not worry about two water changes one will do .i have a small flouresent light i brought of ebay and i have raised the tank so it shines underneath because they go for the light it keeps them under water.i have now put my two smaller reidis in with the barbouris and they seem to be doing well .i hope that answers some of your questions denise

Denise - are you thinking of selling on your 14 week old reidi when they get a bit bigger?? i am setting up (3 months old) my first tank and want seahorses, just need some more algae's and some horses.
would love to take on some of the fry but a 30g is is a bit to big for a nursery me thinks.

Hi Denise

Thanks. When you go to Salt Lake please let me know and I might be interested in the brine shrimp and rotifer if all is going well with the seahorses. Would a light at the bottom of the tank but to the side be sufficient do you think or should it actually be underneath the tank?

We hatch our own brine shrimp. We have got some decapsulated brine shrimp too but the last batch we had was off. They have now been replaced though. Are yours decapsulated or not? People say that the decapsulated ones are better for baby seahorses. What do you think? Thanks for the offer of sending some though. :)

at the moment im not thinking of selling the older babies as i have two large tanks one has my mating reidis in but the other only has two barbouri so i have plenty of room for adults and juveniles but thank you for the offer i have some new reidis coming along so maybe in the future. denise
