Hi, I would like to pick your brains, I have just picked up some giant reidi, and the male is pregnant, due next week, I have kept marines for about 8 years and have just upgraded my system to an 8ft, I have always wanted to keep seahorses so convinced my husband we did not need to get rid of the old 6ft and that I could keep seahorses in it, I would really like to try and raise some fry, do not know where to start , you seem to have it sussed, could you walk me through it please, if you don't mind, debs
well done there must of been alot of time and effort gone into them:thumbsup::thumbsup:

hi debs.i dont mind at all.i use a bare small tank which i light from the bottom .
tank size is about16 litres i place a light at the bottom on the outside of the tank a small fluoresence.i darken the back and sides of the tank as it stops the babies banging into the sides.i also darken the top as well.reidi babies are very small and they are attacted to light you need to stop themfrom doing this as they will gulp air and they will not be able to submerge.the next thing i use is a small heater and i use an airline for the first few weeks.when the fry are born normally at dawn take them from the parents tank in a beaker or cup or use a turkey baster.again try to make sure they dont gulp air.use water from dads tank so they don have to adjust to new water is use water from dads tank for water changes which you will need to do every day.if you have a skimmer it is advisable toturn this off at night when the babie are due because seahorses allways sit under them to give birth:confused:.when they are born thats when the fun begins.i use a mix of baby brine shrimp which i make up 4 batches a dayand rotifers.alot of people have reported success with using a dryfood that you can get from zm one of the sponsers its a fryfood called zm 100 and zm200.ifyou want i will send you some brine shrimp eggs these are a finer grade then the normal ones pm me if you want some .if you want i will go step by step on food prep etc later .i hope this helps so far if you need anyhelp just say .denise....:)

Thanks
So don't need any type of filter attatched? (I have got an old fluval knocking around somewhere,) just lots of water changes, how much 50%? when you say an air line, do you have this near the surface to create water movement?
So I need to get , small tank, small light and an air pump and line?
The other thing I am worried about is that I do have a sump , and a weir, do you think I would put some fine net accross the slats at the top of the weir as that is the only way the babies would get washed into the weir,
I would really like you to walk me through food prep if you don't mind, and yes if you could send me some stuff that would be great,
thanks for your help,
debs
you could stick some fine filter sponge over the weir. i tend to sit and watch until he has them then suck them into a turkey baster, you could have hundreds so it can take a while. Another method is to move the male in to the fry tank before he has them and let him have them in there then move him back, if you use the water from the main tank then he would not need to be acclimatised. Ive done this a couple of times and i found more fry survived in those batches possibly less stress and not being sucked in to a turkey baster :-)
You want the airline to create a circular motion so that the fry and food get suspended in the water column and don't get the chance to get near the surface to much. Also they will face into the flow and catch the food as it floats to-wards them. you could use a small air driven sponge filter, but doing the water changes is probably best as you wont have to long to get the filter populated with bacteria if he is already pregnant.
They will need very small food to start, i use a mixture of live rotifiers and zm100, the idea being that the rotifiers trigger a hunting reflex and then the fry eat the high nutrient value dry food and the rotifiers. You can get some very small brine shrimp spices these might work, i haven't tried them. They need this for a while then i find around 2-3 weeks they are able to hitch and then you start to introduce larger bbs for them to eat.
Also don't be to upset if they all die, hopefully you will get lucky but reidi are notoriously hard to rear.
hope this helps a bit, i will stick some of my baby barb pics up later if i get a chance

whats the speices? Im' alright at the momment but i might give them a go at some point. I expect they are a bit simpler than rotifiers to culture,

you can order though reefphyto they are a good brand you can keep them in your fridge for a week or put them in a container with a salt mix the same as you use in your tank add an airline to keep them moving and they live for ages and breed just keep topping up the water:dance:

in afew weeks im going to have to think about rehoming some of my babies:upset:as i cant poss keep 35 plusthe others, the reidi are staying with me after what happened.my next herd are doing well:dance:but hubby says no more tanks think of the electric:shocking: as if using 6 computers in the house doesnt drain the national grid:rolleyes:but  its always my hobbies that cost.:mad:theres 54 in the next lot and am running out of space what with the lizards, cats and kids.could rehome the kids:scratchhead::wave:but i dont think they will go for it:ponder:.peter has always said if i get a snake he would leave home i think ill try two to make doubly sure:devil:i think its his razor that causes the high bills so i could hide it and just get him disposables and if i hide his soldering iron that will save money too also if i dont make him hot drinks and dinner that would save money so i can have a whole housefull of seahorses:applause::dance:
That was funny! You keep lizards too....??
AWESOME!!! :D
