You don't get the quality of shot you would with a decent macro lense (assuming you have a dslr) but I have tried the macro filters and they work well considering you can get a set for around £10 where as a lense will cost you anywhere from £100 to £500.
Thanks Chew, yes Dslr, Nikon D60. The price was the main consideration at the moment, I might buy a set and try them out while I save for a decent Macro lens.

Ive never used the macro glass lens attachments but it when adding any glass to the lens you take a hit in quality.
If you are on a budget then macro rings or a reversing ring may be the way to go,you will loose auto focus but then again macro work relies on manual focus anyway.
Ive used macro rings on my Canon and have been pretty impressed with them,it depends on the lens you are using at the time though.A 50mm plus macro rings is a pretty good combo.
Just got a D60, so will be looking into macro lenses myself soon! :) Just got to learn work the bloomin thing as it comes out the box first!
Bought some Macro Rings off ebay for £10. Only had a quick play, but so far they seem quite good. 4 Rings x10 x4 x2 x1. You can combine them as well.
Obviuosly not as good as a full on Macro Lens, but better than stock lens.
I will post some pics when I get a chance to do some decent ones, so that you can see what you think.
