View Full Version : juwel rio 125 as seahorse tank??
I am picking up a Juwel Rio125 tank in a couple of days, and would like to know if i could possibly use it for a sea horse tank?
tank dims are
810mm long x 360mm wide x 500mm high. and hold 125ltr of water.
I currently have a 4ft reef tank, so have knoledge of keeping marine fish, but would like o keep sea horses.
I have had a read off the pinned post at the top, and i think i would like to have a go at keeping them.
Also what sort of pairs could i keep. Idealy my wife would love yellow horses, but not sure what size tank they need.
i would be very greatful for any help
thanks

i have a juwel as one of my tanks i still use the internal filter supplied and added an external so i dont see why not.reidi are an ideal seahorse to start with and you can get them in bright yellow.if you keep all females you dont have to worry about babies and internal gas bubble diease .if you go for mixed pairs when they are old enough be prepared for babies every 12/14 days of about100/300 at a time but they are nerly impossible to rear and hard work and would require a nursey tank and lot of work.if you look at other peoples tanks on the forum it will give you some ideas hope this helps denise

I keep two pairs of Barbouri seahorses in one Rio 125 and two pairs of Kuda in another Rio 125. Both tanks are run with the original power head in the internal filter and a fluval 204 each.
As Denise states reidi are a pretty good started seahorse and you can get all sorts of colours just be aware they can change colour as soon as they get into your tank!

also,
can you have finger coral in a seahorse tank? only ask as i have a big one in my tank at the mo, and have 3 large frags that i would like to use if poss.

I wouldn't use these as inspirations for your seahorse tanks! They suit mine ok but you really want to aim for more green stuff

Barb tank

The photo of the barb tank is out of date, there is now a load of macro algae in there but I'm afraid I can't do an up to date pic until my camera comes back from the repair shop.
This is one of my other seahorse tanks which is a Jewel Vision 260. Different tank but a bit more seahorse friendly (although it did have a prune just before this pic!)

What type exactly is the finger coral, if its just the average softy it should be fine. I have loads of softies with mine including Kenya trees, bush corals, mushies, polyps, toadstools etc.
I would just aim for as many hidey holes and hitching posts as possible. The more places they have to hide the more they'll be out in the open (feel safer). In a rio 125 you really should just go for one pair first so creating different territories shouldn't be a problem. Macro algae is the best way to make them feel safe (you don't tend to find seahorses on reef walls)

thats great, thank you for that. The tanks look great in the photos.
all the corals in my tank are all softys, toadstools, finger leathers, mushrooms, xenia polyps etc. So hopefully i can frag a few bits to put in with the horses.
I will have to get the algea tho, as i dont have that in my tank.
I see you have a few fish in your tanks as well. And is that a copperband in you 125lr tank? hows he doing in there, as thats one fish i always wanted or even any butterfly fish, but my tank is just to aggresive for them.
Yes I do have a few fish in there as well - the flow all works so various fish eat at various levels and don't interfere with the seahorses. I've never heard of a problem with a copperband in a seahorse tank (the only problem I have is that he gets into the feeding dish and flushes all the mysis out first
He was only the size of a ten pence peice whan I got him so he's growing on in there before I move him to one of the other tanks.
