View Full Version : Best starter SLR camera
I'm looking at buying an SLR camera for the first time. Does anyone have any advice on what to look for or what camera would best suit a beginner as I have never ever bought one before and haven't a clue on SLR cameras at all:o
Heres a linky -
Dont worry about the price, they can be picked up a lot cheaper than this. :)

I doubt you will get anything new for £250. In the dslr starter market, check out the Nikon d60, Canon 1000d or the Pentax 200d.
It may be better to look out for a good secondhand dslr. I can vouch for the Canon 350d, 400d or the 450d. I've seen 400d's sold for around £200

A good second hand unit is best buy, also the only way to collect lenses at their prices!!!!
Getting a good software pack can be more important piece of kit to think about.....can make the worst pics into professional shots with these...

What software would you recommend?
I use a freebie off windows picasa3.....very simple and basic. Most cameras will come with their own version with the software pack. photoshop may still be one of the best...

if you can get ya hands on a copy Adobe Photoshop CS3 pm me once you get ya camera.
I started with the 400D, fantastic first camera when I look back on it compared to my 40D. Put a nice macro lens infront of it and you're laughing.
Oh yeah did I mention my 400D+grip is now surplus to me. :whistling::p
Jeff.
GIMP is a good entry into graphics software, its a poorman's photoshop, and thats why so many people love it! there's plenty of tutorials and advice on how to use it, and the evidence of what you can achieve with it is definately on a par with outputs from CS3

I have just upgraded from Nikon D70 to the new D90 wot a camera first DSLR with video and it works best lens i can afford it the Tamron 28-300mm
zoom great for tank macro shots maybe more than u want to spend but if u can do it
A second hand or reconditioned Canon 400D is a good start (if you can get one) or maybe a 350D whilst you are learning.
Software- CS3 is extremely good (and expensive) but it might be too much for your needs. Try Photoshop Elements 6/7 (I think theyve just updated).
Remember- You will always upgrade your camera but you will never sell a lense.

There are six refurbished 400Ds available from the Canon reseller at the moment, all with the 18-55 kit lens and it looks like they should all sell for under £300.
