Craig i have the 400d ( first slr for me too ) and think its a great camera - pretty easy to work and got some great shots with it ( mostly by chance as still learning how to use properly ), your more than welcome to have a shot of mine if you like before ordering - yip the 400d has been replaced with 450d now - not sure how much better the 450d is for the extra pennys
Got mine new but there have seen some second hand ones going at great prices :)

ive a 350D and i love it!!! bought it when it first came out.

Its very hard to go wrong with a Canon i think, they make great DSLR's
