View Full Version : Flow in tank
I have got my tank now, the juwel 125 tank. It still has the internal filter in it with pump.
I was going to keep the filter in the tank and put cabon/phosphate romover in it instead of the sponges, and use the pump.
the pump is rated at 600 Lt/Hr which looking at it, should be just about right for the slow flow around the tank (5 times the tank capacity). Problem is, do i point the flow down towards the rock work as im using live rock (berlin filter method) or do i use it to break the surface of the water? if i point it down, what do i use for the surface break? as adding another pump will make the flow around the tank to fast for horses.
any ideas please

I take it that you are keeping seahorses as you've posted in this section!!
Good plan regarding the replacement of the sponge with carbon and phosphates. Horses are messy eaters and phosphate can build up quite quickly.
Your tank is about 125 litres minus displacement of say 20% due to lr and you have approx 100 litres. With a t/o of 600 you might just about be ok. Though recommendation is 20x turnover. Bear this in mind.
Appreciate that you don't want to blast the tank around with horses in there, but I would be more inclined to have 2x600lph in the tank for berlin.
As long as you have plenty of anchor points ie caulerpra growing, branchy lr, then you should be ok. The pumps should not be directly aimed towards the middle (!) But you should adjust it so that it gives good around the tank.
Hope that makes sense!
By the time the 600 lph pump has sucked through the filter/carbon/po4 media you will probably be getting closer to 200/300 lph. I would look at supplementing with one or two of the smaller nano streams if keeping seahorses.
If it is a normal reef I would look at adding a bit more than that.
Cheers both of you.
yes it is for a sea horse tank. I was only worried as reading the pinned post at the top, its says a flow of 3 to 5 times tank volume, which to me is not enough for the berlin method.
I will get a small nano powerhead then, i might even have a spare one anyway which maybe suitable. will have a look later on.
cheers again
Its probably not enough to run the Berlin method at its best. I have two of the Rio 125 and the flow/filtration is achieved by using the powerhead it came with, a Fluval 205 and a Koralia 1. The outlet from the fluval is a spray bar pointed to the surface and the koralia is also pointed at the surface. The original powerhead is directed to the rocks.
