yep the canon is a great little lens, depends if you are going to use it though.Do many portraits? That said its always great to have 1.8 lens in the bag. What will you be using the camera for primarily?

tank shots, scenery, people a variety really
briliiant lens Craig - my next lens will be the Nikon equivalent.
for taking photos of your reef, you should get a canon 100mm F/2.8 macro or the sigma 105mm F/2.8 macro for close ups in your tank. Also, get yourself the Sigma 10-20mm lens, great for architecture, landscapes and for getting a shot of your tank from close up. The 'nifty fifty', is great for low light, cheap and a must have lens in any kit bag, and finally, for a cheapish walkabout lens, get a sigma 17-70 F/2.8-4, it's a fantastic all rounder and only about £200.
If you have cash to splash, substitute the 17-70 for a 24-105 F/4L, awesome piece of kit for everyday use. (i use that as my primary lens).
Oh, and welcome to an even more expensive hobby than marine fishkeeping ;). I started with a second hand canon 10D in 2005, i;ve since spent about £5k on the hobby so far.
The 50mm 1.8 II does some pretty good tank shots (it focuses at under 50cm from memory, and cropped 1:1 is near macro in the detail), and the Sigma 10-20 already mentioned is brilliant for FTS, landscapes, etc (the Sigma 10-20 is a stunning lens, imo).
Most lenses have dedicated groups on Flickr - worth a look to see what people are achieving and see if it fits with the type of photography you want to do.
