View Full Version : Algae's
Hi Everyone
Does anyone have any good places to get the right type of algaes from for the seahorses, and the names of what types we should be looking for.
The LFS's around here are totally useless and never sell anything like this.
Don't mind online LFS that has a good rep and posts.
Thanks alot

As Denise says, go for Caulepra.
I would also ask Sailfin or PinkPony have any recommendations. I'm sure if you paypal PinkPony she will sell you some!
Thanks Dive Master, Hopefully they'll be along and advise a little. I read your post about your babies. Unlucky this time mate, good luck for the next lot, atleast you'll have everything together hopefully for then and it won't be unexpected.

Try simply seahorses in Northwich, Cheshire www.simplyseahorses.co.uk
We have found that our seahorses prefer gorgonians, especially the giant rod gorgonians, something with a bit more girth for them to wrap their tails around.
Green hair grass algae, red bamboo algae and green or red grape algae are good algaes to go for if you'd prefer to go down that route, we have those in our pony tank, but they do prefer the gorgs most of the time.

Simply Seahorses- a great place. The only lfs I know who import their stock from Australia. I paid slightly over the odds for my reidi's but they were great quality!
I wouldn't suggest gorgonias at all for horses. Simply because when they use this as hitching posts, they will kill the polyps of what is a live coral.
As well as the algae, you could use tongan branching live rock.
HTH
Hi Phill,
I have a long leaf Caulerpa that doesn't overun the tank.
I can send you some if you want ?
Won't be much, but in a few week's,should have grown for you.
I sent some to Pinkpony as well, and her Horses liked it :)
If you would like some, just PM me ?
Julie.

just to add, something i've used in my seahorse nano - my lfs keeps the dead calcerous tubes of the koko worms (the hard shelled fan worms)...got a few of these of various widths, and the horses use them all the time to hitch up to....just another option....
agreed though, almost impossible to get hold of suitable algaes....
I can send a little bit of my long leaf Caulerpa,to anyone that want's some ? :)
Julie.
Hi Phill
All the suggestions are great. :D Caleurpa Prolifera is also very good as it looks a bit like seaweed and the horsies love hanging onto it. Halimeda is a good algae to have like Denise says and it doesn't crash. Just be careful with Caleurpa of the feather variety as this can crash. Some people have success with it and some don't. I had some which did well for ages then it just crashed for reasons unknown and made my tank really cloudy. I had a fright when I got in from work but after whipping out the soggy mass that was left the tank soon cleared up and no damage was done. I just ordered some more Halimeda from Ebay but it didn't survive the post. Maybe wait until the weather warms up a bit unless I was just unlucky ... twice. :( HTH.
Joanna
Does caulerpa crash??? Is this bad, how do you stop it?
:thanks:
Thanks all for you great advice, I'll be looking into the seahorses place ty.
Joanna, Can't believe you said that about the halimeda off ebay, grrr i ordered some early this morning, with some cheato as that will be useful. was it from same person who does them in packs of 2 and 3's toby's treasures is it?
once again, thanks all.

Hi Phill
I think I was just unlucky. :( The Caleurpa Prolifera I got from Ebay was fine. It wasn't the same person no so you should be fine. I don't think it was their fault anyway as they replaced it but the second lot was just about dead too even though it got to me the next day. :( Perhaps it's colder here. :annoyed:
Joanna
There's a little hope! The replacement Halimeda has regained some colour. It's still not looking good but at least it's not white!! Fingers crossed. :)
Joanna
got my algaes today, and yes my halimeda was white as snow. why oh why can't they put an heat pack in to atleast help if they know this is happening.
the caulerpa and chaetomorpha is ok.
Phill
P.s Julie i'm not sure if the caulerpa is like the one you was offering but it has a long runner with long leaves coming off it. if so i won't be needing any. but thank you for the offer.:)

Oh no, sorry to hear that. I'm not sure that mine will fully recover either as some is greenish and some is white. There are 2 little bits attached to rock (about an inch long :() that look okay but my Jawfish has pinched one of them to barricade the edge of his burrow.

email the seller and tell them they should either sendsome more or give you a discount.halimeda does go white as it is a cactus mine is sometimes white sometimes green depends how much light etc it gets.

It's when it starts disintegrating that you know there is no hope! :( At least it doesn't crash though!
Joanna
Contacted the seller and she says she is going to send me some more after the weekend so hopefully this will turn up better.
the lot i got was disinterating, but i did try and get some of what look good and put it into my big tank which has more T5's on and it just didn't pick up at all left it till this morning and that part was falling apart so i did try to resusitate it:)

I hope the new lot is okay. My first lot totally disintegrated and made an absolute mess on the sand. It wouldn't syphon out and I couldn't pick it up with tongs. It's kind of disappeared into the sand now. :D I think the hermit crabs might have helped too as they took a big interest in it.
