Hi all,
My wife lost her male seahorse today,we have had him just over a year the female seems fine but what I was wondering was will she need another tank mate asap or should I leave it a while, the male had been gradually feeding less and less until this morning when he had gone,we tried live food for him new types of frozen but he just seemed to give up all parameter's are fine and as I said the female is fine so is the banded pipe fish they lived with really sad to just see the female on her own so just some advise on another partner for her would be great also some advise on good stockists would really be appreciated.
Cheers Dean

i lost some of my seahorses a couple of weeks ago and was just left with one female.they had been a mating pair and had mated the day before he died.for days after she jus sat there very deprressed and listless a week after i bought 3 new horses in particular a male about the same siz as her.within a day she had brightened up and regained her appertite they have now paired up and are like they have been together for months and it has only been 4 days.simply seahorses are a good supplier but are on the expensive side but top grade seahorses.ipersonaly would get her mate asap also as to stockist it depends where abouts youhail from.im from herts so i use enfiled or swallows at colchester....den

Thanks for the reply Denise she seems fine swimming around and feeding as normal, I was thinking about going to simply seahorses Im in Derby in the Midlands so even thought Cheshire is quite far its not hundreds of miles away, I have looked on SS's web site and they have some nice horses in and the Reidi are only £45 which is a little more than we did pay but if they are good quality & healthy I am more than willing to pay a little more, what sort of prices are they down your way as I get down to Hemel with work now and again so could take a look.
Cheers Dean.

I think that the main difference is with the likes of Swallows (where I believe Denise buys her horses from!) is that their stock is from TMC.

Simply Seahorses import all their stock from Australia, so one can argue that it is better quality???

I must confess that I bought mine from SS and they have been good, albeit a female that arrived dead when I got home :-( But they replaced this and the male gave birth on Monday!

If u want to rear them might be worth considering getting the Barbouri seahorses as the fry are a bit simpler that the Reidi or the erectus are meant to be a bit simpler. They all have roughly the same care requirements.

My two barbs came from there and are great eat like pigs and swim about all the time and i still have 27ish babies from a week after getting them home.

For some reason i seem to be a on a Pr offencive for the Barbs.... but they are great with stripy noses my male is currently pink and the female bright orange/yellow colour :-)

interesting...i had an email discussion with SS and was shocked to find out they send their horses out by royal mail special delivery (i didn't thin RM allowed livestock??).....but they said they'd not lost any delivered in this way.......

supposedly RM let you send fry not adult fish but whats classed as fry? you could send a baby great white? from what Ive read on websites none of the major couriers really accept animals for shipping TNT DHL and UPS say they don't but people still send them. i drove up there from Chepstow to get my SH from them as I really wanted the barbs and did not want to get the tiny, supposedly captive bred ones in the local shops

Thanks all very much for your replies I was I little suprised when I saw that SS ship there Stock through the post as this can't be good for them but I think I will take a trip over to have a look at least.
Cheers Dean.

they survive a 24 hour flight from Australia i doubt overnight in a heated box will cause them much more stress than that

Yes, they were sent out by RM. In a poly-box with heat-pack.

My female was ok!
