d60 is the equivalent new model. Nikons are very good but be aware that with the lower end of the market you need to by lenses with a hsm etc focus mechanism or they won't autofocus (don't worry, most new lenses have this). BTW are you intending to invest in more lenses in the future cos if not a 'bridge' style camera would give more versatility?

There are canon alternatives but I would probably go for nikon (and I'm a canon user!) My only issue with the nikon line-up is their mid-range lens selection.....

:thanks: mate what would u advise for a good alrounder. Would rather pay one off for a good camera, than have to spend a fortune afterwards on lenses and extras. Will use it for everything, picures of tank, holiday snaps etc. Just don't know much about them!

I love the functionality of DSLRs and the versitility they give but this does mean investment in lenses; you'll get a better close up from a bridge camera than a dslr with a standard lens IMO. It all depends on what you want it for, how much you're gonna learn about it and what you want to spend. Many people assume that simply buying a DSLR will give them better pictures and often this is not the case. I'm not trying to put you off buying one but many people get one with a standard kit lens and are somewhat underwhelmed.....

With regards to a good all rounder most of the standard zooms that come with kits should be find for day to day use.A dlsr will only ever be as good as the lens used on it and if the lens is suited for the application.
The Dslr cameras are systems that are designed to be built up depending on what you shoot, be that macro , portrait, landscape etc so don't write off the purchaseof additional lenses later. For starters the kit lens should be fine for general photography with image quality above and beyond that of most bridge cameras

get a used Canon 30D, it's a great semi pro body and you'll get one for £300 or even less now, i sold mine a few months ago because i upgraded to a 50D

The 400d and newer versions will TBH take as good a picture as a 30d but are less robust etc (I have a 30d and love it BTW).

I really think nikon have the edge on canon though and if I was starting from scratch I'd probably change. As said before it's just their mid-range lens line up I don't like.

Go to a shop, have a play with a bridge camera (make sure it has all the dslr type funtions though)and a DSLR and see what you like. Then leave them in the shop and have a think about what you want from them. Don't buy one on impulse and don't be swayed by the shop staff!
