View Full Version : Max Glass thickness
Hi
What is the maximum thickness of glass that I could run the Vortech's on?.
I'm planning a 19mm glass tank with a 3mm internal acrylic lining.
I reckon overall thickness might be 22-23mm.
I was hoping to mount 6-8 Vortech's in a 6ftx8ftx3 ft tank, on the back wall....
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Mo
I belive the max. thickness is 3/4" so you would probably be OK if the thickness was just the 19mm.

Could i ask the purpose of the acrylic lining. I'm intrigued

i presume mo means this is a coloured acrlic...black or blue,of which is to be stuck on to the inside back wall of tank,
i have mine done its in blue...:)
i got lent a demo one to try on my 19mm tank,
the two sides would not sit even and just slid down the tank:(wouldnt even hold and that was without even turning it on:(
Strange, John and Cam are using them and their's is 19mm.....
very, mine was from the distributor maybe just a bad one they gave me.
Hi,
Only just caught up with this one.
The tank will be in wall. 1 optiwhite face. I intend to keep the rest of the internals a shiny black colour.... ie keep the rocks away from the walls, build a cavern type aquastructure and keep all the internal black faces free of coralline....hence the black acrylic lining. It does expand at different rates to glass, so need to be kept short or it risks a tank break.
I was going to place around 4-6 vortech's on the back wall firing towards the front, or 3 along each side wall firing into the rocks and flushing them. I might try and use lots of plate rock to build platforsm and keep the aquastructure very open.
I will be having 19mm glass. I might have to ditch the acrylic, or do the 2 sides and paint the back wall. It might have a different visible finish though??
Maybe I could have round cutouts in the acrylic where the wet side of the vortech goes?....

How many do they have?

I their using 6 of them (not sure though).
you could drill the acrilic so they sit into it. but then you'd have a real effort to align the sides of the vortech, so not a good idea really.
i've found mine have dropped off during power cuts etc. so the poles may get reversed at some point during this, that might cause the magnets so separate........

I don't have the experience with them yet, but tell me what you mean.
I was going to run a setup like Steve Hurlock's tank

I thought I might get the acrylic cut out so that the wet side sits inside the cutout. I then have 19mm of glass only between the two sides of the pump.
Are you saying that you can't align the 2 sides properly?.
If so, then hopefully that won't matter as the wet side would be fixed by the cutout ring in the acrylic, but the dry side could be moved around to fit as there is nothing fixing it on the outside glass.
Let me know what you think....
Thanks

Did you do just the back wall?
I'm thinking about doing 3 walls. Hopefully I'm not overlooking any problems?....

How close to the surface can I mount a vortech MP40W?.
How far up from the sand bed should they be to avoid craters in the sand?
I'm thinking of adding 6-8 pumps like the Hurlock tank

The other option is tunze's...
Do you forsee any problems with this set up?
Thanks

Nice support thread......
If I bought some and had a problem, what would I do???

HI
The way the tank on you tube is done is quite common in the US where Vortechs are being used. All these are dry boxes of thinner glass where large builds use glass beyond the maximum currently 3/4 inch.
I believe 19mm is around the max some people find them fine other find they slide.
If you want to have a go as these are great for larger tanks as you are keeping loads of watts out of the water. If you are worried about the glass thickness we can probably sort out a demonstrator to make sure they work with your project.
I believe John and Cam remove the mats on theirs and connect closer to the glass.
If you need any more answers feel free to pm or call
