Even though im probably going to go without a sump for the moment im looking at designs to go in my trigons base. It would be custom made (by me :scratchhead:) using acrylic and the section in the middle (cut out) is because of the support) Would this shape and set out work or would there be problems?

looks good you just need to swap over the equipment section and the MM, DSB section

so
Section 1 tank feed
Section 2 eqipment (skimmer)
Section 3 MM or DSB
Section 4 pump return

Looks fine to me

Only difference I would have is I'd have the carbon in a bag in the very first compartment (in a turbulent area) although I've no idea if you can do that with purigen.
It's just save you the hassle of an extra filter with associated leak risk etc

Cool, cheers for that, will start construction shortly :D

Id put the carbon and purigen in a small internal pump like an eheim pick-up 06 (http://www.charterhouse-aquatics.co.uk/catalog/eheim-pickup-2006-internal-filter-p-2800.html) It would be inside the sump under water (so no leaks) and would obviously have plenty of flow through it as water is being drawn through by the pump

Basic design looks fine, but I would make the MM/DSB area as large as possible. There's no reason why the heater and internal filter can't go in the MM/DSB section, so all you need room for in the equipment section is the skimmer.

Do you know what skimmer you're going to use?

At the mo i have a tmc v2 400...hoped to gravity feed it direct from tank but then realized my own stupidity :o
