i have just purchased a bag of caulerpa from lfs today do i just place it on top of the mud as there is only one small piece with roots, if so will it root itself to mud.

I just threw mine in my sump, seems happy enough. :)

If the water flow is not blowing it about the it should be OK, else poke some of it into the mud and it will develope more roots

I just chuck it into the sump or in the seahorse tank. They develop roots eventually and then bed themselves down.

Take some small pieces of live rock and weight it down onto the mud and it will root very quickly

do not crush this plant.. the result is that is can quickly go into a die off.. when pruning it, it is best to cut it... easy way to root this without crushing it is to take a piece of string and attach it to two pieces of rock so that the string is pulled down to the bottom of the tank... slip the plant under this.. after about a week or less it will have rooted itself in.
