new MM set up

my MM system has just started running ( few days old) and it has 'crud' settling on the bottom of the MM chamber should this be so?

Yep, almost an aim of the MM setup, hence the slow flow rather than high flow and skimmer of a 'normal' setup. :) The critters will love it.
