My current 350L tank has a hob refugium, currently with chaeto, no skimmer. i am planning to add a sump with miracle mud section. Can I add this to the existing tank? Will the mud create any ammonia spikes? Sorry, this ecosystem method is not familiar with me!!!
Also does the 'miracle mud' have an expiratory date? my LFS ahs two 10lbs bags they are selling cheap, but they are around two years old, sorry for all the questions!!
Thanks
Andrew

i think you would be ok,cant see why the mm would not be fine too but im no expert, keep testing while your new mm set up becomes established!

you could always run the sump on its own for a few weeks if you wanted to, and do partial water changes between the tank and the sump to balance them, but i imagine it would be okay to link straight up.

i did this and it didnt seem to have any effect, and this was to a tank that hadnt cycled properly (long story where i had no choice), i added the fuge about 2 weeks after i started the main tank...full details on "hogfish hotel" thread

what you may want to do is to have the fuge running as its own system for a few days to allow any mud to settle before connecting it up to the main tank, if you use mature water as well im sure it will be fine but as with all things like this you will need to test very regulalry and have plenty of water to hand just incase you see a spike

the mm shouldnt go off but it does have mosture in it so that could possibly cause some damage i guess if left in plastic for a long time

i added mm to sump with the reutrn turned off for 5 hours then put back on and tested 3-4 time over period fo 10 hours no problems amonia wise, no real reason why there should

good luck
