how much miracle mud would i need to put in a 18inch w by 14 inch l compatment in my sump to get it 1 inch ?

yours is similar in size to mine and if i remember correctly i used about 20-25lb

i do mate, i am running a schuran had it set up to skim dry but since introducing ozone it is skimming a little wetter

Its up to you really - I don't run one as I believe that it takes out the beneficial products from the sump - plankton, chemicals, peptides etc

The algae is what I harvest to remove nutrients just like a skimmer removing bacteria (hence nutrients) from the water column
