I had to go out last week to a Swedish "furniture" WAREHOUSE in Cardiff, being as I have to travel by public transport I picked up a copy of METRO, to read on the train, as I was glancing through the leafy pages of up the minute (the news from the day before) when I cam e upon an article roughly titled If you do handle the goods you will not want to buy! AS IF On the way back from the above mentioned warehouse, I thought I had better pop into the Cardiff branch of J*****S (when I finally found it) I need some modelling bulbs for my J. studio lights.

Whilst I was in the store I thought oh well, lets see what is new in the Canon Stables, I was shown the D50, I played with it a bit, and I WANT ONE (I still think the article in the METRO was wrong)! It has a bigger screen on the back to the D20 (which is what I have at the mo.) the D50 also sports a Real Time view via the rear screen when it is not easy to use the viewfinder, although when you press the button to activate this, it puts the mirror up, closing off the viewfinder, I do think this is a tad clunky though. There is not a lot that sounds too far from the D20, but the advances in technology though obviously leaves the D20 behind a bit, some of the specs are…………..
15.1 MP (APS-C) CMOS sensor
6.3 fps with up to 90 JPEG image burst
DIGIC 4 processor
ISO range up to 12800
3-inch VGA LCD with Live View
High precision wide area AF
Magnesium alloy body
EOS Integrated Cleaning System
EF/EF-S lens and EX Speedlite compatibility.

The only thing I would want to find out more about is the usability with a Metz 45CL4 Digital flashgun, as I have to say I am not always happy with the way my D20 works with the flash! Sorry if anyone has already covered this camera, I have been absent from the site for a couple of months, having kitchen renovated!!!

Has anyone used the D50?

I do WANT one, is it because i plyed with it as the METRO suggests??? NAHHHHH, i just love cameras

Not being overly fussy but its the 50d not the d50 which is a Nikon.

I have a 30d and will next month be upgrading to the 50d, its a big advancement over that so over the 20d its massive.

I'd love the 5d M2 but cant justify 2k. But I really like the idea of the HD video.

I know the 500d is due out that will have a budget hd video capture but the problem is its the xxxd series which is too small for me.

If I could I guess I'd wait for the 60d next year as thats bound to have HD video also.......but that means waiting another 8 months or so.

oops I did not mean to say Cart & Horse or carriage horseless, of course i meqant the 50Dthen myself of fool a made nearly I

when you say HD capture, i take it you mean still picture rather than video, I have heard rumbles of this, but not really looked into it, i'm not sure i follow the logic of HD still photography, i understand the concept via TV broadcast, to get better picture image (unless you subscribe to SKY HD, using lower HD info), or tree wrong the up barking i am

I'd love to hear how you get on with it, my big bug is still using a Metz flash on it, as i say the results were fairly inconsistant between my 20D and digital metz Alex

Nope he really does mean the real deal, 5d mkII shoots full 1080p video. Seen a few vidoes taken with it and some nice lenses, wowza and really cool bokeh.

I dont know what the 500D shoots but yes like Craig said the 50D replacement will have video too so if this is a feature you're after it's probably worth waiting for. :)

I've got a 40D which I adore, got a few of the 50D functions like Live View, but sadly no microadjustment (havn't really been keeping up but I think the 50D has this too?) which I think could be rather useful.

I do not see the point of combining stills and video, personally speaking i do not like videoing/filming, I have done my share of both whilst doiing photomedia courses in. B.A. but always prefered still to moving image (even created short film from stills through photoshop) I just can not herlp but feel trying to combine both in one unit leads to a compromiz, it does not you say, but how do you know? who is to say what was not ADDED to accomodate boith systems.

What is wrong with having one camera do one thing, and another camera do something els? it is like p[utting a camera into a phone! WHY??? so i9f any of you have the D50 and are planning on ditching it for the gimmick camera, let me klnow how much you want for it.

PLEASE NOTE
THIS IS A PERSONAL THOUGHT, IT IS NOT INTENDED TO PUT ANYONE OFF THE IDEA OF PURCHASING WHAT THEY WANT IN A SYSTEM

I agree that mixing still and video in a single camera is a bit gimmicky.

I think it is a feature that not many serious photographers will use.
