View Full Version : 50d or 40d from 30d
I currently have a 30d, Its time for an upgrade.
Simple Question since they are similar bar the few plus's with the 50d.
so.
50d and maybe the 18-200 IS lens
or
40d and a decent L lense..maybe the 17-40l
Heart says 50d.
Brain says get some decent Glass.
That being said would another option be keep the 30d and get a couple of good L lenses?
Thoughts?
Thanks.

As you know i have the 40d and if i had the dosh to buy a 50d id buy new lenses instead to be honest.Couple of reasons.
One Nothing improves iq like a new lens, two my 40d takes pictures that please me.
Maybe over simplistic but thats where i stand. The 40d isnt much more of a camera that the 30d though but i do like the larger display.
So to sum up,50d if you have a good lens,40d plus lens if you need a decent lens.Just my opinion mind.
Keep the 30D.. get another nice lens (or two) for it..
From the time I spent at Canon doing some courses they was a lot of talk about the development of the bodys. They were saying the 30D to 40D was a big jump. I think the same for the 300D to 350D, but there after minor improvments. The Same for the old 5D and the new one.
So from what was said a body upgrade to either would be a benifit.
What they also said - Lens is much more important that the body in majority of cases. You can get a better picture with an old body with superb glass than the latest 3 grand camera with a crappy lens.
I have the 40D and would not even look at the 50D. not a big enough improvment to justify. Some of the benifits with the 40\50 are the way it handles high ISO. You can get very acceptable pictures at 3200. I have done comparisons with A3 photos at 1600, 800 and 400 and I can not tell the difference in quality. If you get bigger you might!
This advantage in low light can be very useful.
L series lenses although expensive and weigh a ton are well worth it IMO.
HTH
I'd say the same - the 30D is a more than capable camera. An L series prime lens or two would be a better choice for an 'upgrade'.

Lol thanks guys....
I'm going to sware now......as I dont have any decent lenses, (recently sold my 100mm Macro), I'm even considering the Nikon D90!!!!!!!
But yes the 30d with maybe a 17-40L and another other maybe 70-200L would sound like a decent route, my only concern with the 70-200L is the size of the damn thing.
Anyone know which are the "good" IS lenses to get?

I owned teh 70-200L f4 i.s for a while,light and superb in low light conditions.Didnt have the money for a 70-200 f2.8 i.s.I did however swap it out for a 70-200 L 2.8 .
You just cant beat that 2.8 for bokeh,i might have had a bad copy of the f4 but i find the i.q of the 2.8 much better.Yes its heavier, the 2.8 i.s heavier still but its worth it imho.
If you have little in the way of lenses I'd switch over and get a D300 (I have a 30d BTW and wouldn't bother with the 40d but might be tempted by a 50. Prolly go for glass though....)
I would definately get an L series lens.
Consider upgrade to 40D and I can highly recommend the 24-105 F4. It is a fantastic lens with Image Stabliser.
yeah but what gripes me at the moment is Lenses have got up around 25% over the last 3 months.
I was almost ready to get a 24-105l but £800!!!!!!
Yup, lenses are well pricey ATM. This (http://www.anepaxworld.com/)place was brought up on here a while ago. Dunno if it's sound or not. One of their shops is near to where I will work and I'm gonna check it out when I get the time.....
Edit: just did a bit of digging and it doesn't look good........
Got to be too good to be true.
Let me know if you visit the shop and its ok though.

I have a gut feeling it doesn't even exist. Just looked up the head office address on streetmap and couldn't see anything.
Seen a couple of threads on other forums about it being a scam. 'If it appears too good to be true......'
