Hi all

Anyone give me there opinion on the above mentioned lens? Looking at picking up a decent Macro and am obviously hankering after a Canon 100mm, BUT... if I can't get one at a good price then I may pick one of these ones up...

Any pros compared to the 100mm? How good is this lens?

Any info greatly appreciated :thanks:

Gav :)

I think it only does up to half life size rather than 1:1 but not 100% sure. Also can't be used on a FF camera which may or may not be an issue for you.

It is indeed a 1:1.

I Promise I am not on commision for this guy! But here is a good review

Compairs to others in the range also. FF=Full Frame. The 400 is not FF!

As I said I wasn't sure as one of the efs lenses defo only goes up to 1/2 life size.

If you want to upgrade to a full frame camera (bigger sensor) at a later date then this lens will not be compatible. Not an issue for most but may be for some.

I would also mention that a 100mm will have a greater working distance (distance between subject and camera) ie you can get full life size from further away as it has a longer focal length. This is a plus for me (especially for shooting fish/corals) but again YMMV.......

I currently have a 40d and I have always held off buying the EF-S lenses as I hope to get a 5D MkII.

EF-S lenses will not be compatible with full frame.

I think if you are ever going to consider a full frame (I think these will be more affordable in the future) then it's definately worth spending a few more pounds on an EF lens.

I've seen some stunning macros taken with this lens on crop-sensor bodies. Check out the Flickr group for this lens to see what it can do.

I have this lens on a canon 40d with a 60mm macro.....and maybe wish I'd bought the 100mm as the 60mm I feel dosen't go close enough........as regards ef-s lenses, yes they wont fit full frame, but hey, buy them, use them, then sell them.....I've also got a 10-22mm EF-S which is Fab. Sean

The 100 is my favourite canon lens. It's great for portraits also.
