I have the original RSM 130 & have done several mods/add ons to my tank, as per my signature.
I have also just installed the new skimmer which has made a big difference keeping scum of the water surface.

Heres mine finally! - It's cycling now
Hello all,
I'll be joining this group very shortly - picking up a 130D from my LFS on Saturday. So looking forward to getting it going - I'm a complete newbie to marine fish keeping.
I'm not in to modding/experimenting too much, I really want to just enjoy my tank and see how it goes. That said, I think there are a couple of things that I would consider and would love to know what you guys think:
Skimmer inlet hole - supposedly helps lots with cutting down on noise? I've tried to find details on what's involved with no luck - any pointers?
Adding an extra powerhead to increase flow (Tunze 6025 or 6045 maybe?)
Replacing the filter media with LR and Cheato. Has anyone here done that? Other than adding an extra light (waterproof LED) is there anything more involved? Is it worth doing?
Anything else you guys can think of?
Thanks,
Mahin
Hi mate, ive got the 6045 in mine, its far too much flow tbh. go with the 6025.
This is my 4th tank and a downgrade from my previous. been keeping marines for about 3 years so STILL very much a n00b.
What i love about the max is the lack of maintenance required. Dont mod, just enjoy :D
Hi,
Thanks for letting me know. I would have thought the skimmer mod and the pump would be a minimum? I'm not entirely convinced of the LR/cheato mod yet.

it IS noisy but im used to worse :P
Ive got cheato in the space between the skimmer and the heater and stuck a submersible light in there.
I'm slowly making my way through your thread - lovely looking tank. Would be chuffed if I can mine to same sort of state.

Had mine for about 6 Months or so - looking to mod the pumps and maybe add another reef led strip.
Other thing I did when fitting rays was rewire stock fans to a changeable voltage psu and run them at half voltage.

Hi
we have got an ex demo red sea max 130 in silver which had a lot of water damage to the cabinet door, We have covered the damaged area with plastic and painted the door to cover the area. I would like to try to run it as stock with maybe a powerhead for extra flow, will try to post photos asap. What other powerheads do people use, and how many?
We also have a Natural wave multi pump timer made by Aquarium solutions which was on a former tank but now isnt used was thinking of maybe using that bit was wondering if 4 powerheads would be too much as I dont want to end up with a washing machine effect. Any suggestions?
Carol
I use an extra tunze 6025. I'm hopefully going to get an MP10W ES one day!

I'm a relatively new rsm 130 owner :) 2 months now.
Could really do with some advice though, my skimmer has been working fine and then my partner pulled it out slightly the other day to help me reach the skimmer cup out and now has stopped foaming :( Have took it all out and the bottom pipe with the blue catch attached is the only thing I can think of being wrong as the catch seems slightly loose. Only other thing is my partner picked up the inlet pipe to adjust the nozzle to fully open and said he thought there was apipe inside it that looked like it fell out. Is this true should there be somethin inside the inlet pipe or could i be something else??
HELPPPP :)
Am I right in thinking that the Tunze 6025 and the Vortech MP 10 do the same job? No point in having both in an RSM 130d?
