View Full Version : adding an external filter
Has anyone added an external filter ,has it made a difference to the water quality ,,,, what did you put in to the filter ,,, looking at getting a fluval 205 ?????
would love to get some input ,,,cheers Tom
Why would you want to do that tom? Would it fit on the max?
i had a rena xp3 running full of filter floss, nothing else
i ran it 24/7 and it took loads of stuff out the water.
I removed it a as i was worried it might become a nitrate factory.
I may run it every now and again to polish the water?
it would be better for me ,, i would run the back chambers as normal , but run the external filter with floss ???? clean 2x per week ,,, , the hoses can be fitted via the same way as if you were running a chiller ,, the 205 filter can fitt in my base as the chap i bought it from cut a hole in the base to take the fluval 205 ,,,,,
cheers mate ,, i re-scaped lastnight and the water was still a bit cloudy this morning ,, i had changed the filter floss in the back chambers 3 times since 6 pm yesterday, i fyou keep on top of changing the floss then nitrates should not be a prob :thumbsup: i had a rena xp3 running full of filter floss, nothing else

Tom,
I have a Fluval 205 on my rsm130 and I use it for floss, carbon and to feed my UV. Its good for the carbon and east to clean. My only suggestion is to take all the foam pads out and put floss where they used to be (foam = Nitrates).
Rob :)
Many thanks Tom,

The only downside with the Fluvals is the priming lever is pants.

Hi,
I run a fluval 405 in my RSM130 (bit overkill, but it was a spare for our 4' tropical tank). it's runs filter wool in 3 of the chambers and purigen in the top chamber (no foam used at all). It powers the chiller and the UV steriliser. I changed the filter wool out weekly and give it (the whole filter case, impeller etc.) a thorough cleaning monthly. My nitrate levelss are consistently 0.5mg/l (salifert low range reading) or lower.
The inlet is positioned just above the skimmer pump assembly (I had to cut a section of the hood out) and the return is fed into 1 of the fixed hose assemblies on the rear of the tank as I had a lot of issues with microbubbles when both the inlet and outlets were connected to the hose assemblies and in the same section of the tank.
Priming was a pain until I replaced the priming assembly with a new and hey presto, easy priming :-)
I did have an EHEIM 2222 running which was OK for just the UV steriliser (again only running filter wool and purigen), but not quite the power for the chiller. So it's now sitting to one side waiting for me to flog it.
Apart from the low nitrate level the water seems a lot cleaner
hi all what type of filter wool do u use (im still runing on pads:()

I'm currently using SERA filter wool, although I usually get the JBL variety from my LFS (bigger bag and cheaper).
