Hi Fugu
Does ISO ever go from brown to green? Or do I need to clean out my reactor and start a fresh batch?
thanks
Hi Nemoc - apparently yes I've been told. If possibly chk under a microscope to see if its actually contamination with Tetraselmis. Once you have a good culture try and keep some aside non-aearated but illuminated with just cotton wool in the bottle neck and swirl 2-3 times a week and feed with nutrient once a week; this is a convenient way to maintain a back up and can last several months.

Hi Fugu do you have some iso ready?(says advance orders on site) I'm determined to get a culture going
Cheers Mike
Thanks Fugu, I will check tomorrow, hopefully it is still a monoculture. What ferts do you recommend for this on you web?
Hi Nemoc
Tetraselmis will be obvious if present - see the pics earlier in the phyto sticky thread for Tet and Iso; Tet will be zipping around like mad.
For nutrient see Micro Algae Grow:

Thanks Fugu
Nannochloropsis is what I now have grrrrrrr.
Which means
1) do you have some isochrysis in stock or for next week.
2) I can't autoclave/pressure cook at home, can you tell me what dosage of sodium hypochlorite (or calcium hypchlorite) I should use for sterlising the equipment and water.
thanks
Hi Nemoc
Live Iso in stock and ready to harvest/ship today. For chlorination you're looking for a dose of approx 1g calcium hypochlorite per 70 litres. Strain your chlorine solution with a 53 micron strainer to limit the transfer of undissolved chemicals. You'll be needing approx 11g of sodium thiosulphate to dechlorinate a 70 litre volume.
Cheers
Fugu
thanks I will place an order in a few minutes, could you please post it on Monday though? I will include my user name in the order.
Order placed Fugu and thanks.
I have a new one of your micron minifilters and am wondering how much aeration you recommend for the settling in week for the isochrysis? and then for its normal growth phases?
Hi Nemoc - aeration levels should be regular and not too vicious to avoid damaging the cell walls. The current stock appears to be pretty reliable and happy to be diluted for growing on. Cheers.
Great stuff. Once it is ready to be used for the tank and isopods do I just let it settle our and remove most of the water or do I need something smaller than the 53 micron sieve?
If live culture use as is no need to further concentrate for everyday use with a mesh finer than 53 micron. Cheers. Fugu
