Thanks for the replys much appreciated, the problem is it is already filled with water, live rock and sand
 i guess if putting a bit of elbow grease with a plastic scraper fails i will have to empty it and use the vinegar method.Just out of interest can anyone see any potential problems if i were to somehow fix a sheet of black perspex over the top leaving the filter vents free?
