Cool Operation Gulp.....

Well, it has finally happened - the Chief Planning Officer (the missus) has finally given the green light for a new installation!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!

Ideally I had wanted a 4 footer or maybe bigger, but we have compromised on a 3 ft tank, but to maximise the opportunity I am going to make it 36x27x27 (not quite on the scale of some of the beasts we have marvelled at recently...) for extra water vol (80l more than 3x2x2) plus all the good stuff that comes with extra space. I'm currently waiting on my friendly neighborhood LFS coming back to me with a price for a custom built tank and cabinet as a complete unit, but I think cost will be prohibitive and will go down the route of a galvanised steel frame with wooden cladding etc (part of the planning permission was the seamless integration into the dining room and the existing furniture) and buy the tank separately.

The tank will be a mixed reef, one or two specimen softies that I currently have and love, plus a mixture of LPS, SPS, Clams and gorgs. Light fish stock consisting of what I currently have (minus 2 yellow gobies which are acropora nuisances) plus maybe a few more choice additions.

Plans so far are (and feel free to comment, suggestions encouraged and welcome )

Tank: 36x27x27 glass, single left hand side weir with either Durso, or twin outlets (high and low with ball valve on one)

Lights: 3ft single 250W halide with in built actinics

Sump: ideally 30x18x12/18 with auto top-up (osmolator or Deltec)

Skimmer: still undecided (advice please), was considering Deltec APH525 or similar, AM TF Blue 3000, Blau Scuma NW150 (Reef Octopus clone??) - any other ideas welcome

Flow: 2 Nano 6045's + 1x6025

Heating: 300W heater plus control (maybe also a cool control subject to temp range)

Filtration: reef bones (cured) plus some live rock from existing set-up

I am also debating whether to go ULNS or not, so advice welcome there. If not then unlit DSB with phos reactor and passive carbon in the sump.

Calcium reactor: TBC (again advice please)

Plus all the other usual stuff (sand bottom around 1", rock on egg-crate etc etc)

I'll try and post as many pics as I can along the way, with any luck the tank will be here in a few weeks along with the completed stand, and the real fun can begin!!

Hope you come along for the ride

Regards

Darren

Here's the first pics - my mock up to persuade the wife that actually, half a ton of rock and water would really be a fine addition to the dining room!!!!

Well, I like your plans, and the planning I've been doing for the last 6 months for a 36*24*24" look remarkably similar to yours! Just finding the cash to do it is the problem!! Also tryed the mock up idea before but they still didnt seem to latch on . Almost all my shopping list contents are listed above, apart from the skimmer which I thought on past experiance would go with another V2 800, (larger size due to the drain port and longer reaction time).

keep posted, am interested on where you go and how things work out.

Best of luck

Ben

Cool mockup!! Looks good - just a little larger than the tank I'm planning at the moment, so will watch to see if I can nick any ideas!!

I am hearing some bad reports about Tunze nano's atm. That's why I am not go-ing to use them on my Jewel 260 conversion....
